Virgin Birth in Biological terms

In another thread in the Moral Theology forum I read that a human posseses DNA from both the mother and father (a recollection form biology class).

In the case of Christ, he was born of the Virgin Mary who concieved through the Holy Spirit. He could not have had only Mary’s DNA, or else He would have been a clone of her.

However, we are told that it is God the Son, not God the Father who is the visible, physical God. We also know that Mary concieved through the Holy Spirit, not a physical encounter with God (no matter what the mormons say).

So, where did the rest of Christ’s DNA come from? He was concieved spiritualy, but His DNA was physical. How?

This is a duplicate of the same question raised on the Jesus’ DNA thread.

It was probably one of those unique physical events, like the raising of Lazarus or Jairus’ daughter. We’ll never know, we don’t have samples of Mary’s DNA to check against the possible samples we have of Jesus’ own DNA.

Certainly, no DNA was added to Mary’s DNA, for this would make the conception not entirely virginal and miraculous. Most likely, the DNA from Mary was also changed to some extent, so that Jesus was a male with a unique human body, yet without any biological father.

This is analogous to the consecration of the Eucharist, where the bread is changed into the body of Christ. Nothing is added to the bread, but rather the bread itself is changed. So also, part of Mary (including, I suppose, some dna) was changed to produce the beginning of the body of Jesus Christ.

I hate to sound like an non-critical thinking wet blanket, but – lacking additional special revelation – any conclusion we can hope to come to on this would be entirely speculative. This goes for other mysteries such as the Trinity, Creation ex nihilo, transubstantiation, etc. When it comes to God making a special and unique intervention into the human sphere, the very last question we can ask is “HOW?”

Caesar, we simply don’t know and probably never will. Neither does it particularly matter whether he had no DNA or abnormal DNA or where it came from …

As noted in a previous post, God created the laws of nature and has reserved the right to suspend them at his will…when he does it is called a “miracle”.

I look at it like this. God created Adam. Where did Adam’s DNA come from? Jesus was the second Adam. I assume he got a mixture of his mother’s DNA and some from the same source that Adam got his DNA from. God created it.
