Do Muslims believe in the virgin birth of Jesus to Mary? If so, why?

Thanks

George

always interested in learning more about Islam, but I am having trouble with the grammatical construction of this answer. Do you mean the reference to the Virgin Birth in the Quran is sign that God is a prophet? Do you mean that it is a sign that Mary was a prophet? A sign that Jesus was a prophet? Is it a sign always present when a prophet is born? Was Muhammed born of a virgin as a sign of his “prophethood?”

i mean that prophets come with signs that indicate that they are true prophets , like miracles , and the virgin birth was one of the signs of the prophethood of Jesus Peace be upon him.

Do you mean that it is a sign that Mary was a prophet?

God has not ordained women prophets. However Mary is the best woman ever walked on earth. She is considered on the level of a patriarch .

A sign that Jesus was a prophet? Is it a sign always present when a prophet is born?

No, God chooses diferent signs for different prophets as he wishes .

````Was Muhammed born of a virgin as a sign of his “prophethood?”``````
No, the issue here si to recognize that the miracles is a miracle to US and not to God . God can split the sea and raise the dead equally as easy . For us or any other human or prophet he is just a performer of this miracle through Gods will and permission and grant of power. However miracles and signs are just a part of the message . There are many nations that havent believed even al miracles was there. At the end of teh day Guidance is at the hands of our lord .
I am sorry i am an Egyptian Arab Muslim and my English isnt perfect so i am sorry about any grammatical or spelling mistake .
Peace
Thank you meedo for your response. Don’t be too concerned with your English, it is far better than my… well, English is it, so you are doing great! 👍 I was uncertain if Islam recognized the virgin birth of Jesus.
What were the signs of Mohammed’s prophethood? Thank you for taking the time to add to my knowledge and understanding.
Hi George,
Just for your reading pleasure 🙂 , here’s some translated verses from the Quraan that talk about the birth of Jesus, peace be upon him:
And mention in the Book (the Qur’ân, O Muhammad SAW , the story of) Maryam (Mary), when she withdrew in seclusion from her family to a place facing east. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our Ruh [angel Jibrael (Gabriel)], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects. She said: “Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allâh) from you, if you do fear Allâh.” (The angel) said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son.” She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” He said: "So (it will be), your Lord said: ‘That is easy for Me (Allâh): And (We wish) to appoint him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allâh), and it is a matter (already) decreed, (by Allâh).’ "
So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said: “Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!” Then [the babe 'Iesa (Jesus) or Jibrael (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her, saying: “Grieve not! Your Lord has provided a water stream under you; And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.” “So eat and drink and be glad, and if you see any human being, say: ‘Verily! I have vowed a fast unto the Most Beneficent (Allâh) so I shall not speak to any human being this day.’”
Then she brought him (the baby) to her people, carrying him. They said: "O Mary! Indeed you have brought a thing Fariya (an unheard mighty thing). “O sister (i.e. the like) of Hârûn (Aaron) [not the brother of Mûsa (Moses), but he was another pious man at the time of Maryam (Mary)]! Your father was not a man who used to commit adultery, nor your mother was an unchaste woman.” Then she pointed to him. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?” He 'Iesa (Jesus)] said: “Verily! I am a slave of Allâh, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet; And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salât (prayer), and Zakât, as long as I live. And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest. And Salâm (peace) be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!”
(Surah Maryam 19:16-33)
And also George, people do sometime question Muslims on this belief. They wonder how we can believe he was born of the virgin Mary, yet not worship him as God, as the Christians do.
The virgin birth of Jesus was one of the signs of his prophethood, but it is not something that justifies the worship of him, as Allaah states in the Quraan:
Verily, the likeness of 'Iesa (Jesus) before Allâh is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” - and he was. (Surah Al-Imraan 3:59)
If we were to worship Jesus, peace be upon him, based on the him being “special” because of his miraculous birth, having a human mother but no father, than if this is the case, Adam, peace be upon him, would be more worthy of our worship, as he had neither human mother nor human father. He was completely “from God.”
So we say to our fellow Christians that Jesus’ birth was one of the signs of his prophethood, just as God equipped all his messengers with various signs. Does that fact that Moses parted an ocean make him better, than say, Isaac? Does Adam having no human father or mather make him better than Jesus?
We answer these questions with the statement of Allaah in the Quraan:
Say (O Muslims), “We believe in Allâh and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrâhim (Abraham), Ismâ’il (Ishmael), Ishâque (Isaac), Ya’qûb (Jacob), and to Al-Asbât [the twelve sons of Ya’qûb (Jacob)], and that which has been given to Mûsa (Moses) and 'Iesa (Jesus), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islâm).” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:136)
Hope this helps.
Thank you jcaz, I do appreciate the information you provided and my apologies for my tardy thanks to you. Our friend meedo must be taking time away from the forum to celebrate Ramadan, so would anyone like to address the question I had asked of him (sorry for being impatient meedo)? What were the signs of Mohammed’s prophethood? Thanks all.
George
