Virgin Mary Defiled on South Park!

I wrote them a letter of complaint. You’re welcome to copy and paste my letter into an email and add your own comments or modifications.

**Mr. Califano,

I learned through a Catholic message board that the TV show South Park, which is owned by Viacom, last night ran, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, an episode blaspheming the Virgin Mary to the most horrific degree possible.

I ask that you intercede on behalf of all Catholics offended by this episode by having Viacom do two things: to please issue an apology to Roman Catholics and to promise this episode be will permanently retired and not be made available on DVD.

In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking that you, Mr. Califano, as a Roman Catholic, please issue your own statement of condemnation.

South Park loves to make a mockery of everything Christian. They’ve mocked Jesus and Mel Gibson on numerous occassions. They live to offend every person on our planet. Send it to the Factor if you like, but you won’t change anything.
 
I’ll have to agree with RockLobster. If South Park mocks both God the Father and God the Son as they have done before, not to mention their mockeries of well-known Christians, then its defiling of the Virgin Mary is not surprising. It is a vile television program, even when it is not overtly mocking the Christian faith. A lack of surprise doesn’t take away from the sadness all of this mockery causes, but one member of the board of directors will not stop a godless company that is making lots of money from this. I doubt that Catholics make up any substantial percentage of the viewers of this show, so it’s not like they’re losing ratings over these issues.

If Mr. Califano is indeed an upstanding Catholic, then he has no doubt stood against many of the things Viacom has produced, apparently to no avail. If you feel it is your moral duty to express your outrage, then good for you! I’m glad you’ve stood up for your faith and for the Virgin in this way. Just please don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t change the practices of people who have no fear of God.

Dear Mr. Joseph A. Califano:

I am writing to express how deeply offended my Catholic sensibilities are as a result of the episode of South Park which aired last night. This outrage, on the very feast day when Catholics worldwide were celebrating the Immaculate Conception, makes it an even more egregious offense- if that were possible. This episode warrants a public apology and swift action to make sure it is never offered again for public consumption under any form whatsoever.

Furthermore, as an artist I am familiar with the argument for freedom of expression and artistic license; nevertheless, freedom is the right to do what is good not to do whatever one pleases.

This episode is a manifestation of the disturbing undercurrents of
anti-Catholic propaganda which is daily gaining momentum. The boldness of this latest attack hauntingly parallels the pre-WWII Nazi era when Jews were humiliated and joked about thereby laying the groundwork for the persecution that followed.

The writing is on the wall in this off-the-wall episode. If
you do not take measures to do whatsoever is within your power to reign in these destructive forces of prejudice and hatred you will be in formal co-operation with evil and may live to suffer the wrath of this unbridled evil yourself.

May the blessing of the Infant Jesus and His most holy mother be with you.

I’ll stand up and be called a fool any day for defending the honor of the Mother of God. While one might get away with making fun of God I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near someone picking on His Mother.

Come on; show some spirit and at least try to make this world a better place just for today.

Just so you all know, I didn’t say that I wouldn’t write a letter. I’m still thinking about it and about what I would say. I just wanted to point out that it isn’t likely to change what Viacom does, especially considering that they’re not likely to lose any South Park ratings over this. Maybe I am too cynical about this. I suppose that if one person at Viacom starts to think twice about their flippant attitude, any letters that get sent would have effected a positive change of some kind.

Fantastic letter, Rosalinda!

Mine would’ve probably had more fire had I actually seen the episode. It airs tonight 9PM Pacific Time on Comedy Central, and I intend to see it for myself, tonight, to see if it’s as bad as it sounds. Incidently, the episode is titled, “Bloody Mary.”
 
I watched the episode, and it was disgusting beyond all belief!!!

:confused: I understand what the overall gist of your post was, and I agree with you for the most part, but I definitely find issue with this sentence. Making fun of God Himself IS a bigger deal, and ideally, no one should be able to get away with it without protest.

I’m guessing sea oat is referring to the fact that we often include God in jokes like this one:
An atheist is sitting in a canoe in Loch Ness when suddenly Nessie herself wrecks the canoe and tosses him into the air. As he is about to be swallowed, he cries "Oh God, help me!’
God replies “I thought you didn’t believe in me.”
The atheist replies, “Hey, a few minutes ago, I didn’t believe in the Loch Ness Monster. Give me a break.” :yup:

Excuse my careless language; you are most certainly correct; however, my thought was more a long the line of Jesus as portrayed in Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ” He took all the blows, the spits unto His Face, the lashing of the whips… Such is the humility of Our Lord. Nevertheless, had one of those soldiers ever attempted to harm His Mother the response would have been swifter than a bolt of lightening which is why I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the person. Theologians are free to correct me.

I don’t know what your intentions were with this post, but I’m assuming they weren’t to be unnecessarily sarcastic with me. 😃

I’m pretty sure you knew I was referring to the type of blasphemous jokes about God one would see on South Park, Family Guy, etc.
 
Can a profane television show really insult God, Jesus or Mary? I don’t think so anymore than a flea can insult a man. Be in the world, not of the world. Don’t let trashy entertainment get under your skin and whip you into a frenzy. That is exactly what the show is trying to do. If you fret about such productions, of which there are many,(the movies Dogma and Eurotrip come immediately to mind) you will waste a lot of the time God gave you being upset when you should be at peace.
 
Can you imagine the face to face meeting between Jesus and the writer of the show when the day comes? oh my!

Hopefully he rethinks things before that day comes.

Let just say that the WARM feeling he will get will not be a good one.
 
The problem is, who is watching these programs? I can bet it’s impressionable young people who are just forming consciences and maybe even questioning their faith. That’s the sin…that the producers and even the commercial advertisers are hurting the souls of children. This may be a teachable moment for those of us with children and for those who teach children. Along with writing our disgust to the TV shows, we also need to extend an effort to correct the wrong by teaching the children what is truly the purity of Mary and the gospel of the Lord. Even if we are only reaching one child at a time…it’s worth the effort. Peace to you this Christmas!

Along with stbruno’s excellent points, I would like to add that the defaming of our most cherished beliefs in the public forum with no rebuttal by us tells these people that Catholics are a subspecies that can be marginalized without retribution. This was the attitude of the Nazis towards the Jews, about which no one did anything, and the end result was millions of Jews AND dissenting Catholics in concentration camps being turned into ashes and worse.

If we don’t stand against such mind sets we will pay for it down the line, and if anyone thinks these sorts of horrors can’t happen in a free society, think again. We are no longer a free society but one being formed daily by a minority set on destroying religion for their own ends, and they are very good at it. They have permeated every form of communication and government. We are fighting a war for our very survival. Don’t let the fact that it has been sneaking up on us for years fool you into thinking it can’t get any worse, because it most certainly can.
