we’re out there who practice chastity! Rare but out there! God Bless! 🙂

Would you like to check out my post about chastity?
You will be able to find it if you click my profile:)
I’m a Catholic who believes in power of chastity and I’m very glad I do.
I’ve been frustrated cause of the exact same thing you’ve asked.
Are they still there?
I think there still are…just like me.
I’m praying for Catholics & Non-Catholics who are not practicing chastity.

Just to make a point that often gets confused, married people who only have sex with their spouse also practice chastity.

Not necessarily, though you are correct in this: chastity is a virtue God desires in all, regardless of marital status. As defined in the CCC glossary (bold mine).

The moral virtue which, under the cardinal virtue of temperance, provides for the successful integration of sexuality within the person leading to the inner unity of the bodily and spiritual being (2337). Chastity is called one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit (1832).

Yeah, we still exist. 🙂 We’re a rare kind these days, but we’re out there.

I practice these virtues, and I know many people who still do. Lots of people don’t, but don’t let them drag you away from God’s will. 🙂

Are these virtues still practised by young Catholics?

Around me, so many Catholics cohabite before marriages.
It[sup]1[/sup] is indeed, and I don’t think the people who practice that virtue are rare but instead are just quiet about it (which I think is the proper approach, anyway).

  1. Since virginity would be symptomatic of following the virtue of chastity, rather than a virtue itself. A good symptom, of course.

I find our culture is so hyper-sexualized, that (for me) even the majority of conversations I have with brief acquaintances often revolves around some form of sexual banter. In such circumstances, I can’t help but be open about my position on the issue, which always makes for some very interesting conversations indeed.

I’m in my 30s now, but my husband and I were both virgins when we married in our 20s and we did not live with each other. Although there are young people who do practice these virtues, from what I see and people I know (even those who profess to be devout Christians or any other religion), cohabitation has become “normal”.

Many of the Catholic and other Christian denomination weddings I have done in the 10+ years as a musician for weddings, were couples who were already living together. Our diocese even has a special pre-cana program for cohabitating engaged couples, they realize how much of a problem it is now.

Some people do cite economics as a reason for cohabitating, but I do think it’s much more than that. It is a change in culture and values. It used to be a stigma and a scandal if a young woman was known to have engaged in pre-marital sex. It’s no longer considered that. I even remember Catholic books sold at young adult Catholic conventions (I even bought one in college - I don’t know where it is now) where a Catholic couple talked about how cohabitating before marriage could work without having sex. To me, that just left the door wide open to temptations and opportunities, so I threw that idea out.

Getting higher degrees also doesn’t mean that people will cohabitate either. My husband has his masters and I have my bachelor’s. Even though it was tough trying to live on our own while dating, I made things work. I hustled, became creative. I worked 3-4 jobs seven days a week for two years with literally a handful of days off I can count on one hand during those two years, before getting married in order to live on my own without giving the excuse that I had to live with my boyfriend/fiance to make it work. It wasn’t easy and I’m not saying everyone should and can handle doing something like that. I did it because I wanted to and needed to for my own benefit. I didn’t want to live at my parents’ home, even though it would have made things so much easier and my mother really wanted me to live at home. Before I got married, I wanted to prove to myself that I could live on my own without depending on anyone else to support me. I needed to do that. I do believe, though, that if you really want to live by the Church’s rules, you can make things work.

Anyway, don’t feel discouraged if you feel like you are the only one in your age group living like this. You need to stick to your convictions and beliefs despite the pressures of society around you.

Citing economics as a reason for cohabitating is intrinsically wrong. Why don’t they get married then?? People can get married as soon as they attain the age of 18.

In summary, people cohabite outside wedlock because they are not ready for long term responsibilities but still want to satisfy their sexual needs. That’s all.

I’m a 32 year old woman who is a virgin. I am not ashamed of it. God’s grace has preserved me and I give Him all the credit. I value chastity very highly in a future spouse and even if he’s not a virgin, which seems like an unattainable ideal, I just want him to be on the same page with me. I believe very strongly in chastity and am committed to remaining a virgin even if I never get married.

How about a the simple fact that some couples just don’t know it’s wrong?

🤷

No, I’m serious.

I was raised and taught that it was “okay” to live with someone you loved and intended to marry.

My sister did it and my parents never blinked an eye.

When my husband and I moved in together 2 years before I walked down the aisle…NO ONE said anything to convince us otherwise.

When I found out it was wrong…I didn’t believe it. I’m not kidding when I said I started doing google searches to see if the claim that people who lived together before marriage had a higher rate of divorce.
I wanted to make sure that wasn’t true.

When I found out it was…I was crushed. So crushed that I convinced myself that my husband would never want to marry me and since our marriage would be destined to fail…maybe I shouldn’t even bother.

I want to make it crystal clear that not everyone knows it’s wrong to cohabitate. This generation has been saturated by it so much that they aren’t ignoring rules…but literally don’t know it’s wrong.

You are right. Cohabitation is being a norm these days. If you are 18 years old and still virgin, you will regarded as fool, out of mind, or even having some kinds of mental disorders 😃

Believe me, I know.

I actually managed to keep my virginity until I was 21.

That was just weird according to all of my friends. I felt like I had a stigma on my head. I was teased relentlessly. I thought there was something wrong with me. They actually were trying to get me to sleep with any random guy.

And that was exactly what I did. And I regret it so much.

Fortunately, I learned my lesson after a couple of years of heartbreak and resolved I wouldn’t do anything like that again until I met a man I knew I would marry.

Not the best logic to have…but I didn’t become a Catholic and learn about the Church teachings until 2 years ago.

I’m lucky that the only man I’ve ever lived with, besides my dad, is my husband.

If I could have done it all over again…I would have gladly waited until I was 28 and had married my husband. But…it is what it is.

I just know that we won’t be getting a divorce…despite the fact that we lived together before marriage.

If you don’t tell people (who make it their business to know) why you’ve made the decision you’ve made and defend it coherently, then of course they’ll look at you like a fool, because they are applying the same low standards of life they live, to your own.

It’s tough when you’re young and you want to fit in and make friends.

Topics like that come up.

My parents, and the parents of almost all of my friends, did not instill the importance of chastity until marriage. My parents cohabitated for five years before they got married. Who were they to say it’s not a wise idea when they’ve been married for 30 years? My parents still feel this way.

I was friends with the girls that tried to “help” me loose my virginity since I was 15. They knew what was going on in my life.

I was naive and no one taught me otherwise. I’m also not an isolated case. Plenty of parents don’t teach the importance of privacy and chastity. Kids get confused and are also blinded by this overwhelming sense to fit in.

It’s very easy to chastise a 24 year old for airing their dirty laundry…but not so easy to do the same for an 18 year old…or younger.
