I have never had sex, although one time I attempted with a prostitute and then felt an overwhelming sense of guilt and intervention prevented me from going through with it.
My question about this, is a Catholics engage in intercourse through the union of marriage??
By the way, I am not quite a Catholic yet, I am researching the religion.

And also, since a child I felt a strong connection with the belief that love is an important thing, and sex must not be abused but the enviroment I live, is quite atheist. I know no other people who think the same as me.

I might be misunderstanding you, are you asking "Do Catholics engage in intercourse only through the union of marriage (sacrament of matrimony)?

If so, yes we believe “intercourse” is only meant for two people of opposite sex. The act itself is a union between the man, woman, and God. The mindset for the couple should be that of a giving, loving nature open to the possibility of children rather than just trying to “get theirs.” Sex is an absolutely beautiful gift from God, it’s a sign of love and giving to that **one **special person whom you have committed fully to. Think about how sex affects people (generally) outside of marriage:

Problem #1: A couple dates, engages in sex, and breaks-up, and the cycle repeats as do the chances to contract different STD’s.

Problem #2: A couple dates, engages in sex, becomes pregnant but the father has no interest in raising children and decides to the leave the women. Now I understand married men (and women) can do this as well, however if the two were fully informed of the importance of marriage, children, and sex than the likelihood of one or the other leaving decreases.

Today’s culture has robbed the sanctity and beauty of sex and marriage, cheapened and exploited in almost every field of advertising, entertainment, apparel, etc.

If this hasn’t answered your question please let me know. I’m new to the forums but I have spent years studying Catholicism, which has lead me to the church! 👍

If you would like more information of the Catholic stance on marriage and sex I’d recommend “Good News About Sex and Marriage: Answers to Your Honest Questions About Catholic Teaching” by Christoper West.

You mentioned you’re investigating the Church and I wish you good luck! Remember to keep an open mind while studying and objectively analyze teachings before deciding whether it’s “right” or “wrong.”

My prayers are with you friend! 😃

I second the book recommendation. My fiance and I read it together actually. OP: you need to do some research and and reading on the Church’s teachings. You will not get the “whole story” by posting in a forum.

Definitely agree, CAF is a nice supplement to your studies but should NOT be you’re primary source of answers. 👍

I am doing my research. There’s been different stages in my life when I looked to religion for help, only this time I’m looking harder.

I think I am in a lucky position, with an agnostic/atheist life and not formed any kind of doomed relationships, as I like to call them. As in sex from the word go.
I feel that maybe there’s a good reason for that as well. For all of my sins.

I’ll tell you. . . from everything I’ve read about prostitutes and johns, you should be extremely thankful you didn’t do it. Johns get caught up in enormous guilt and self-hatred (even if single) and can generate a cycle of personally abusive and harmful action. It sounds horrible to get in such a trap.

Of course, the material-physical aspects of consorting with prostitutes is pretty nasty; disease, etc.

It’s okay to be celibate. The more you do it (be celibate) the easier it gets.

Yeah, prostitutes are just a bad deal in every aspect possible. They carry diseases, which you seriously don’t want. Also, you just shouldn’t throw your virginity away like that. Sex isn’t that great, especially meaningless prostitute sex. It’s highly overrated by secular society. I wasted mine on a random hookup, and now I deeply regret it. I will never understand guys who constantly persue one night stands. Not only is it sinful, it’s kind of a waste of time.

I don’t want to be celibate forever, I would like to obviously do the wait until love and marriage vows, I guess I’ve waited this long.

You can do it my friend, you’re on the right track! Do you have any more specific questions about sex and marriage that we haven’t helped to answer? 🙂

This life isn’t about sex and it isn’t about what we want. Life is about listening to God and growing in love with Him. If, on your path to God, you find a woman who can help you grow in God’s love and who you feel attracted to, then fantastic. But being so closed off to other callings (such as single life or religious life) is not listening and responding to God’s desire for you (and His desire, for the record, if for you to be the happiest you can be).

Good luck with staying strong in the faith! I hope your studies lead you to greener pastures.
