I feel the same way and you expressed your thoughts a lot better than I can. 
I think of it this way, God is infinite, eternal, and inmeasurable. The finite cannot travel through eternity however eternity may travel through time. And he did say, the Kingdom of heaven is within.
I do not see that as egotism, I see that as his love. He made us to know him and placed a spark inside his creation so that something deep within would recognize that fact, or at least have the capacity too and recognize that maybe something is missing.
