HOLYHEARTS

Has anyone been to visit some or one of the cloistered
Visitation Monasteries? I am an older woman & searching
for a fervent & observant community that accepts older
vocations. Some of the monasteries have no website,
like Philadelphia & Snellville (GA)… Anyone been to
either of them? Also, anyone know more about Monte
Maria?

HOLYHEARTS-I went on a five day retreat at the Visitation Monastery in Philadelphia ten years ago this past May. The main part of the house is a large old mansion, with add-ons for the chapel and the infirmary. I liked the community-there were all ages respresented there. I took part in all the community activities-prayers, meals, work, recreations. The only thing I wasn’t part of was when the Superior gave the Sisters their ‘obediences’ of the day, in the morning and afternoon. When that happened, I was sent out of the room. It would be better to go [if you decided on this community] in the fall-it can get pretty hot and sticky in Philly in the spring and summer!

I have seen websites for Monte Maria in Virginia, and for
“Mont Deux-Coeurs” Visitation Monastery in Tyringham, Massachusetts. The latter, I know, is on the Institute of Religious Life website. ‘Mont deux-Coeurs’ means “Mount of Two Hearts”-you like that? 🙂 ]

Almost forgot-the Monastery in Philly is [literally] in the backyard of the Archbishop’s residence! And in 1979, the Sisters got to see John Paul II ‘up close and personal’…they actually met him at the Archbishop’s house! I saw photos of that meeting, both in the mailing I received from the Superior, and when I went over to the infirmary with her during my own visit.

Why didn’t I enter there, you might ask? Well, I was very undecisive at the time. A job I had for almost 25 years was going to be eliminated a few months’ time, and I didn’t think I could make that drastic a life-change at my age (43 back in 1998).

And even now, ten years later, I still can’t make that kind of drastic, life-altering decision!

I have never visited one of the monasteries, but I am strongly considering a visit with the Visitation Sisters of Mont Deux Coeurs in Tyringham, MA. I read the Novitiate News and the sister who was talking about their life really made me want to visit them. I don’t think I’m called to be a Visitation Nun, but hey! You never know, right?? 😊

Their website is great. A lot of pictures and such. Hope this helps! God bless you on your journey!👍

They’re all listed (except Maryfield) on my website:

cloisters.tripod.com/

There are a couple of habited convents of the second federation, also–Georgetown and Brooklyn.

Please let us know if they’ve set an age limit. I heard that they had due to the incredible influx of older vocations.

Blessings,
Cloisters

An undated reference at the 2nd federation website states that they had 12 novices in this federation who gathered in St. Louis.

Thanks so much for this information. I am very interested in the Visitation communities. My prayers go out for all those discerning their vocations. 🙂

Thanks for that information. I will look into that community also. Have a Merry Christ-mass! :christmastree1:

For any interested in the Tyringham Visitation, there is a wonderful interview with their Mother Emmanuel on the iPadre at this site recently: ipadre.net/page/3/ - at the end you hear the sisters singing some of their Vespers.

For Snellville Visitation in Georgia, no website as stated by other posters but I have these links on them:

Article on new Mother: georgiabulletin.org/local/2008/06/05/superior/

Previous Mother and sisters in a blog: kellywegelphoto.blogspot.com/2007/08/story-monastic-life.html

Archdiocese of Atlanta has a picture of the monastery and contact info for Snellville: archatl.com/parishes/mon/monasteryofthevisitation.html

Article of the sisters making altar bread with a photo: georgiabulletin.org/local/1999/06/03/h

I am looking into and have been writing Mother Mary Bernard at the Toledo Visitation and the Philly Visitation.

I just finished a five day cloistered retreat at the Visitation Monastery in Mobile, AL.
This is a beautiful monastery, it is also historic. The nuns wear a full habit and
abide by their rule. You can visit their website at Visitation Monastery Mobile,
Alabama. There are currently 9 nuns. They need vocations and will accept
older women. I would suggest to anyone considering monastic life to visit
this community. If you would like more information you can email me at
maryannmorrison@bellsouth.net or maryannmorrison@att.net

The Toledo Visitation is observant, in habit, and was accepting ‘older’ vocations in the past, not sure not as they’ve had an influx.

The poster ‘Cloisters’–Gemma-- might have more updated info on them. Not sure they have a website, but googling ‘Toledo Visitation’ in quotes might yield more info.
