Visited a Maronite Divine Liturgy

And I have to say it was one of the most beautiful and reverent liturgies I have been to, thus far, as a Catholic. I didn’t understand the Syriac, but there was a liturgy book with translations. I have a few questions about the liturgy

Before you sit down, are you supposed to bow to the altar, or genuflect. I actually saw both used.

When you go to receive the Eucharist, is it permissible to genuflect, or just bow.

Also, would someone be able to show me an outline of the liturgy so that I can learn the Syriac parts of it? I really want to go back.

Another thing, who else has visited a Maronite Divine Liturgy and how did you like it?

So can I assume that no one here is Maronite or can give me insights into the Syriac/Aramaic parts of the Qurbono? :confused:

Sorry Andrew, I’m not Maronite, but from another older thread (2005) about Archbishop Sheen, here’s some information that you might find helpful:

The Maronite Church, like many of the Catholic Eastern Churches, has been latinized to some extent…the genuflection is an indication of that and is probably acceptable in many churches. It would be more traditional to bow in both the examples that you give.

I don’t know of an online outline of the Qurbono, or Divine Liturgy, but you can order one from here, or simply copy one of the books at the church. Please note that the volumes are season sensitive.

Tradition is to bow, genuflecting is a Western tradition. Maronites only “take a knee” twice a year.

Neither, in fact. Please be sure to respect taking the Eucharist by the tongue (what is called ‘intinction’) and not ask to use your hand.

The only resources I have are Syriac only, I don’t have any translations except those Seasonal Texts Charbel offered. Perhaps you can ask the local priest to review the texts with you?

I have visited many, many Maronite *Qorbonos *(‘Offering,’ the correct term, though here in the West ‘Mass’ and ‘Liturgy’ are often replaced), though certainly prefer the ever-so rare traditional Qorbono.

I am Maronite and have been to the Qorbono several times. I don’t have the knowledge of the tradition like yeshua does so I refrained from answering. I am just beginning to learn about it.

yeshua, for the sign of the cross. What is tradition? Do Maronites do it the same way the Eastern Orthodox do it or is there some traditional way that is specific to them. I have tried to watch others a few times and often see them doing it from left to right.

Left to right like the other Orientals. I did have one Maronite priest tell me that the original was right to left, but I find that hard to believe considering the other Orientals sign the way we do. Traditionally, a Maronite is supposed to sign as the Syriacs: three fingers, index above the others, remaining two down.
