I am going to visit our local Byzantine (Ruthenian/Ukrainian) Catholic parish (once I get the correct address) and was hoping that someone could help me out in the way of a missal type guide.

I have tried to google it and have come up with all sorts of super confusing “help”.

St. Luke’s Byzantine in Kansas City, MO. Thanks for the link

the communion will probably throw me off, but I think I will handle it just fine. Perhaps Iw ill grab some one and ask for assistance.

My whole point in going is that I want to experience the full range of Liturgies we have to offer in the Catholic faith. I could only wish we had a Maronite parish in the area. I will most likely make a visit to one of the Orthodox parishes, and the local Coptic church (which is only a few blocks from me).

chotock you said

Something I heard a long time ago may help you.

Think of how a baby bird in its nest is fed - it tips its head back and opens tits mouth wide and Mommy bird carefully drops the food in.

I assure you Father is used to coping with visitors from the West who feel uncomfortable - but don’t worry.

Just go with the flow

I just read the quote above and realized that I need to lay off the tootsie rolls and coffee if I am going to type anything.

Thanks for the tips, I will let you all n on my experience next week. This Sunday is the first with our new Liturgy and Music director and I am exiceited to see more changes for the better (his first day he moved the choir back to the loft and moved the piano with them, repositioned the cantors podium and asked that the Responsorial be done from the Ambo)

Chotock,

Al/a pilgrim and wynd have offered you the two very best “etiquette” guides available on the net and Wannabe has, in her usual fashion, provided an excellent description of how to approach the Mystery of the Eucharist.

Here’s the address info you were seeking: Saint Luke’s Byzantine Ruthenian Parish.

There is also a Ukrainian Greek-Catholic parish in Saint Louis:

St. Mary’s Assumption
11363 Oak Branch Drive
St. Louis, MO
(314) 487-6982

They don’t have a website, AFAIK, so you’ll have to call for info on the time for Liturgy.

You mentioned the Maronites, actually the Cathedral of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon in Los Angeles of the Maronites is in Saint Louis (the short explanation, the Eparchy has relocated, but the canonical designation has not yet been changed). See: Saint Raymond’s Maronite Cathedral.

For Orthodox parishes in your area, see Orthodoxy in America - Church Locator, which will provide addresses for the Eastern Orthodox parishes. (When you use the locator, type it in as Saint Louis, MO - don’t abbreviate Saint and do use a comma, it’s finicky that way). There’s a broad representation of jurisdictions in the Saint Louis area: Antiochian, Bulgarian, Greek, Russian (all 3 jurisdictions - OCA, ROCOR, and Patriarchate of Moscow), and Serbian.

As to the Oriental Orthodox:

Saint Mary & Saint Abraam Coptic Orthodox Church.

St. Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (no website, AFAIK), 3100 Sidney Street, Saint Louis,MO. 63104

I think that pretty much covers it, as far as the Eastern/Oriental Catholic and Orthodox Churches which are represented in the area.

ooooooooooooh Joe < blushing like mad >

You should see me trying to explain this in French 😃

But you have presented Chotock with everything he needs - now we wait to hear the reaction from his first visit

You hear Chotock ??

A good rule of thumb when attending any liturgy that you’re not familiar with is to stand toward the side or back and just try to follow what the other (presumably more experienced) worshippers are doing.

Watch and learn, what you read on the internet might be difficult to understand until you see it and might vary by location, much like in the Latin rite, where, for example, hands are held at the paternoster in some locations, other local churches have different traditions.

If it comes to the communion, and you’re not 100% sure what to do, see what the others do and just do the same as them.
