To honour God is our first duty that comes before our duty to any human person.
Listen up buddy, you seem to have serious issues and are acting like a bully.

You come to an illogical conclusion that because those of us in mixed families occasionally visit another church, we are derelict in our duty to God, yet we have already told you that we also ensure we meet our Sunday obligations. The Church does not forbid one from visiting another church.

The moderators should close this thread, it is going nowhere with you continually harassing observant Catholics who don’t see it your way.

It is you in fact who is bordering on heresy by imputing evil on folks doing something that the Church does not specifically forbid, your quoting of centuries-old non-ex-cathedra teachings notwithstanding.

In fact the Church actively encourages dialogue with both separated churches and other religions.

Heresy on my part? Just because something is centuries old does not make it obsolete. Dialogue to bring about conversion, not to play happy families. That is what Pope Pius XII taught in Humani Generis, and that is not even a century old.

I have attacked no one personally. I have accused no one of mortal sin. I have said what the Popes have taught before this virus of a false ecumenism has crept in since the Council.

Because I love and respect my wife. Period.
And:

"Is it permitted for Catholics to be present at, or to take part in, conventions, gatherings, meetings, or societies of non-Catholics which aim to associate together under a single agreement everyone who, in any way, lays claim to the name Christian? In the negative!.. It is clear, therefore, why this Apostolic See has never allowed its subjects to take part in the assemblies of non-Catholics, There is only one wav in which the unity of Christians may be fostered, and that is by furthering the return to the one true Church of Christ those who are separated from her. " (Pope Pius XI, Mortalium Animos).

Who says that the Catholics who attend those non catholic services are taking part in their service? Do you honestly believe that Catholics who go to non catholic churches recieve their communion? Suppose they are there for dialogue? Suppose Christ wants them there (undercover:cool:) to bring back their separated brethen to the One True Church established by Jesus Christ, the 2nd person of the Blessed Trinity?

Hi 🙂

I’m very sure of my faith as a Catholic… and I wouldn’t consider switching to another form of Christianity or another religion.

But I was just wondering if it’s alright to visit a non Catholic church, not because you want to convert, but for another reason. For example, my family is Eastern Orthodox and would it be wrong to go to a DL with them as long as I also go to Mass? Also, my family don’t receive the Sacraments, so would it be right for me to support and encourage them to receive Communion and go to Confession at their church, even though it’s not Catholic?

In addition, I was thinking of visiting my old non denom. church just to see how it’s like now, after 2 years, and to see my friends there. Would this be wrong?

I know the early Church was very strict on worshipping with schismatic churches but what is the Church law on this? Again, Im not looking to convert at all.

Please give me the traditional teaching, not anything watered down, thanks 🙂

God bless
monica,
why would want you to visit another church?
Most churches do not allow non-members to receive Communion.

I would not dishonor this rule while worshipping in another church. Anyone should ask the Pastor before communing. .
I could be misunderstanding your post. Are you speaking of a Traditional CC?

‘‘Well all believers in Jesus are not Catholic or agree with the teachings. His will is that I love Him and my neighbor whoever my neighbor is.’’

It is attitudes like that which are dangerous and lead to religious indifferentism. If you accept what you like in the Gospel and reject what you don’t like, you are not believing the Gospel, but yourself.

You are right that true ecumenism is that which is done to bring non-Catholic Christians to the one true Church, outside of which there is no salvation. Yet how many Catholics believe that today? The prevailing attitude is, ‘well we are all Christians, aren’t we? so who cares that we differ on certain matters, its not that important’.

Pax tecum.

Well I sure am glad I don’t agree with you. There is salvation if you just ask Jesus to come into your heart.

"Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?’'

There’s a lot more to Christianity than saying a simple ‘sinner’s prayer’, asking Jesus to be your ‘personal Lord and saviour’. He founded one Church that the gates of hell would not prevail against. He sent out His Apostles under St. Peter to preach the message. He didn’t give us free reign to make up what we like.

Receiving Holy Communion in other churches is not allowed. At least in most christian churches.
Permission must be gotten before you commune or you are dishonor the Eucharist.
I would not presume to attend Mass in a Catholic church and receive the Eucharist.
I would expect you to honor my church in return. (LCMS)

Really!! I am not stupid and I do not agree with you. Jesus’ church is made up of believers from everywhere, I am one of them.

That is not the Catholic Church’s understanding of herself. You are on a Catholic forum, so it’s not a surprise you will have people disagreeing with you.

The Church is not a mere spiritual union, made of Christians who profess a faith in Jesus, but are separated by particular differences, devoid of a hierarchical institutional structure.

I believe you can visit any church you want but you must still do your Sunday Obligation and refrain from protestant communion at ALL times. You may receive Holy Communion in the Eastern Orthodox Churches in an emergency. The EO Churches all have valid Sacraments because they have a valid priesthood. Protestant denoms have no valid priesthoods and the only sacraments they have are baptisms and marriages.
jay,
Would you please explain 'Non-valid pastors or priests ?.
All Christian churches worship and love Jesus Christ.
To have a personal relationship with the Lord is required. Repent and walk worthy according to His word. Love one another.
The Greastest Commandment given by Christ can be found in Mt.22:36-40
I hope you read this. Also Mt.7:1-5 Do not judge, lest you be judged in the same manner you use on others.

Really well I happen to attend CC and sorry I don’t agree with all.

stuart12 is merely stating the doctrine of the Catholic Church which states that “Outside of the Church there is no salvation”(Catechism of the Catholic Church #846) which means that the fullness of the means to salvation is to be found in the Catholic Church.

**“Outside the Church there is no salvation” **
[846](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/846.htm’)😉 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:
Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336

847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:
Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.337
[848](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/848.htm’)😉 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338

stuart,
Separated from what? The love of Christ?
Are you judging other Christains because of Church membership?
I understand you love your church and what they teach, that is wonderful, but to judge the relationship other Christians have with our Lord isn’t a loving way to show your love for Him.
Jesus Christ loves everyone, even me, a lowly conservative Lutheran. 🙂

Jay is talking about validly ordained priests who were ordained through the laying on of Hands through the ministry of the Church by the successors of the Apostles: the Bishops.

As to your objection that we ought not to judge one other (Mt 7:1-5)… telling someone that they were not validly ordained is not “judging” them, it is merely stating a fact… like say Zachary is 5 Feet 11 inches…its a fact, not a judgment against me…

Why is it considered judging to say what the Church teaches regarding salvation?

The Church’s teaching is clear. Catholics who are unwilling to accept it as it does not appeal to their sentiments are not truly Catholics. There are plenty of holy non-Catholics out there, in fact I know a number, and they put us (who receive the sacraments frequently) to shame. I am dealing in generalities. I have not said ‘Mrs So and So’, as you are going to a baptist (or whatever) church, you will perish in hell.’ Catholics must not attend and worship in protestant services. Simple.

Not to be rude or anything… but if you actually took the time to read his posts you will see that he is not judging you or any other christian but rather restating the doctrine of the Catholic Church which says that the Catholic Church is the one True Church & that outside of that Church there is no salvation

Your brother in Christ,

To convert them. Is it not a duty of Christian’s to bring other’s to the truth and to eternal life? Mere faith is not enough.
It is only your job to open someones mind to the Truth. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can convert someone. John 16:13 says “But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all the truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you.”
also
John 14:26 says “But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whomb the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.”

This might more deal with the Holy Spirit guiding the church without error but I think it could be said the the person would have to be guided to the church and the Holy Spirit would do that. All that you as a follower is point them in the direction.
