Why did Jesus preach to visit prisoners, but never went himself to visit John the Baptist?
How do you know he did not? Because Nathanael did not seem to notice that the Lord was by his side, either, until the Lord revealed this to himWhy did Jesus preach to visit prisoners, but never went himself to visit John the Baptist?
I have to say that the other Gospels don’t ‘state’ that Jesus and John the Baptist were not cousins, they are just silent on the matter. The Gospels differ as to the relationship between John the Baptist and Jesus. Luke says they were cousins, but others state there was no relationship. Jesus could have started his ministry after John’s imprisonment just to fill a vacuum.
Certainly, if they were cousins, Jesus would have visited him, unless he was fearful of being arrested himself.
But John was imprisoned in the cistern in Herod Antipas’ palace in Macherus, which was in Perea. Herod was about to wage war with Arabia, and John was arrested to make sure he didn;t cause any trouble.
Herod had a great interest in Holy Men, and in Mark it says that Herod would go and hear what John had to say in prison “gladly”. Herod was probably nervous about going into battle with Arabia, and having a true Holy man imprisoned would hardly make him any more lucky.
Herod was probably going to release John after the conflict, but then Salome did her dance and, well, you know how the story goes.
Interestingly, Herod Antipas only learned about Jesus AFTER he had executed John, and lost the war.
