Hey guys, just wondering what some of your favorite visual novels are and if there are any that u are currently playing or want to play. For those that don’t know what these are, they are basically digital novels in which the player, every once in a while, is given choices to make that effect the outcome of the story. It’s like a “choose-your-own-adventure” story, but usually (or at least hopefully, lol) with beautiful music, visuals and sometimes voices to accompany the reading experience. Many animes are actually based on their visual novel counterpart like Clannad, Kanon, Fate/Stay Night, etc.

Some of my personal favorites are Ever 17, Phantom of Inferno, True Remembrance, May Sky, A Dream Of Summer.

I currently have 2 visual novels on my queue list (and will probably get to playing them this week): Brass Restoration & Angelic Sonata.

If you’ve never played thru a visual novel before and are interested in trying some out, there are a number of them out there that are Freeware, so they are legal to download. Listed below are just 2 of the most well-known sites (fyi, just be careful of the 18 and older games, as they may contain hentai/adult scenes and/or explicit language/themes):

Ren’Py Visual Novels
Insani Visual Novels

True Remembrance is one of the most popular free ones available, and I would recommend it as a good 1st visual novel if one has never played one before - I believe it take a few to several hours to get thru, depending on how fast u read. Here’s a quick 2min video of the OP of the game: youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=owkDRurfJW4

I wouldn’t suggest Fate/Stay for people on here, it is a hentai novel (pornographic). I liked a lot of them along those lines at one point, though since returning to my faith I’ve pretty much cut them out of my life. Honestly though, I find the game-play to generally be pretty boring.

Although it is adult in nature, Utawarerumono is one of my favorites because it’s also a genuinely good tactics game, with some visual novel elements thrown in for good measure; they also made a pretty good anime from it.

To anyone who is interested in these, just be careful when you’re searching for them; the vast majority of them are hentai games, so any google searches are liable to put you in a position you likely probably don’t want to find yourself in 😛

I wouldn’t recommend the visual novel either, but the anime is pretty good though, one of my personal favorites actually. However, there is actually an ero (hentai) - removing patch for the Fate/Stay Night visual novel and an all-ages (non-hentai) game called Fate/Stay Night Réalta Nua. I haven’t played either of them, but I’ve heard how awesome the storyline is.

As for Utawarerumono, I think I watched only like a few eps of the anime a long time ago. I think I just couldn’t get into it, and there were a lot of other animes that I was interested in at the time, that I never did quite get back into it.

Haha, yeah, I agree. Random googling isn’t probably the best way to search especially if one isn’t used to searching for visual novels. And yes, it’s unfortunate, but many of the commercial games are ero-games, but thankfully, it’s pretty obvious which ones they are since they should be labeled 18+ or something along those lines. Many of the doujin/freeware ones though, thankfully, do not contain ero-scenes. The 2 links that I had mentioned in my OP post are prolly the best ones out there for Freeware visual novels - and I think are safer than randomly googling for visual novels. 😃 Hopefully, no one here will do that, lol.

I believe Fate/Stay has had an all-ages release, though.

Most/all VNs by Key are hentai ones as well, but again, many have all ages releases, too. Kanon, Air, and Tomoyo After are originally adult games, but they’ve had all-ages editions released, too. Clannad, Little Busters, and Planetarian were all originally all ages with adult editions released later.

(Thanks Wikipedia)

At least the anime of Key and TYPE MOON strip the objectionable stuff out. The anime for the Fate series, Kara no Kyoukai, Clannad, Air, etc. are all definitely safe from the sex standpoint. Some might have some gore, though.
