So awhile ago, I decided to redo my bedroom and I’m at the point of cleaning my walls so I can paint them. Because I cleared everything except my bed and dresser out, this also meant that I moved my picture of the Blessed Mother out along with any of my other religious items except for a cross. Since that time, I’ve had REALLY vivid dreams of a sexual nature regarding the m word. They are pretty obviously dreams because there’s other crazy stuff happening in them and I always wake up after them. However, I feel really guilty afterwards. I offer up an act of Contrition and try not to think about it because from what I’ve found, one cannot sin in dreams.
But, sometimes, they feel real and I wake up feeling slightly aroused. It’s a pain and really makes me upset with myself because these dreams do spring from past sins that I’ve already confessed and haven’t gone near for a while.
So, I moved my image of the Blessed Mother back into my room as well as a Divine Mercy picture and I’m going to sprinkle some Holy Water in my room but I was wondering if I need to bring this up in Confession. Not the part that I dreamt of sinning but that part that it feels real and I have doubts if something physically happened when I was asleep.

I always pray before bed and it doesn’t happen every night. I’ve been praying to the Holy Spirit to help me know what to do because I’m going to Confession on Thursday. I already have received Communion after I had seen that one cannot is in dreams but I do feel scared that I might have received with a sin of doing something in my sleep.

EDIT: This is a post from my cousin. She’s been asking me about this and I didn’t have an answer except for her to ask the priest. She’s not usually anxious but this has thrown her into a tizzy. I know she’s scared because she doesn’t want to have ended up committing sacrilege by receiving Communion in mortal sin since she’s not sure if this was a sin. Also, she said she omitted it from her last confession and hopes that wasn’t a sin. She had thought she was okay because of the fact that you cannot sin while asleep or dreaming. I think because she’s relatively fearful of confession, she was hoping she might be able to leave this bit out but of course, doesn’t want to commit more sin.

You are not responsible for your dreams unless you are doing something like looking at porn. In that case viewing porn is wrong but the dreams we have no control over. Your cousin should stop worring, keep praying and growing in holiness.

So I would assume I can tell her she does not need to mention it in confession?

I would not mention it. If she wants to she needs to not just confess but ask the priest for his opinion. I think she will get the same answer and that can help her not to worry about such things.

i understand it may be uncomfortable to talk about but perhaps she should. Perhaps she will find relief in her clergy reassuring her. They have training in counseling (usually) and may be able to comfort her. Also, it could be something else. perhaps she should research dreams and the gifts of the holy spirit.

I’ll pass this along. I think it would be good to bring up to the priest as well.
