Does anyone know the answer to this question?
There is no difference between a transitional and permanent deacon. The ordination is the same, there is only one order of deacon. The stole is worn the same way by both – hanging over the left shoulder and attached at the right hip.I Then comes the stole, the garment that he wears around his neck and drapes his shoulders. It symbolizes the office of his priesthood. If he is a deacon, it is draped eithe ron the right shoulder or on the left (this depends on whether or not he is a permanent deacon or a transitional deacon–on his way to becoming a priest).
Thank you for the correction. While I know that therer is one order of deacon, I was confused as to whether or not the transtional deacon wore his stole opposite the way a permanent deacon would. For some reason, I thought that one wore it hanging over the right and the other one wore it hanging over the left. There is no difference between a transitional and permanent deacon. Actually the sticharion is more equivalent to the alb than to the dalmatic. The closest equivalent to a dalmatic in the east is the bishop’s sakkos.Byzantine Vestments (Used by Byzantine Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox):
Dalmatic or Sticharion or Stikhar: Robe. May be colored or white. Worn by all who serve at the altar. Priest’s are narrower of sleeve, and less ornate; some jurisdictions use white for priests sticharions almost exclusively.
None the less, the term Dalmatic (and Dalmatikon) is one of several correct terms for the deaconal, and especially, the minor orders’, and servers’ Sticharion.Actually the sticharion is more equivalent to the alb than to the dalmatic.
