I was invited to discern serving at the vocations committee at our parish and I’m at once both excited and trembling. Excited, because vocations are very dear to me, be they for the priesthood, religious life, third orders or other associations of the faithful. Trembling, because it entails responsibility for something that I’ve never done before.

As a matter of fact, when the Lord calls me to challenges that make me tremble, I know that that’s where He wants me. After all, the “harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few.” If He planted so many vocations that go unanswered, He calls many to help in the harvest of vocations too.

How did such parish committees help out those who answered the Lord’s call?

TIA

One of the members of the Committee talked a lot about vocation and that’s what got me to think about and also to know whom to ask such as: having a spiritual director, talking to vocation director, visiting religious orders and attending vocation retreats.

I pray for your discernment. You should go for it. I think you will be a very good candidate.

God bless!

Things that helped in my discernment included simply being approached by random people who said I should look into becoming a priest, attending the National March for Life in Washington, D.C., visiting a seminary, being introduced to young energetic priests and seminarians, and being invited to participate in parish activities and service projects outside the parish. These are things that you could implement in your vocations committee, if they’re not already in existence.

Work closely with the diocesan vocations director. As I understand it, Fr. Brian McMaster is to assume this role in August. He is a wonderful priest and comes from a highly successful vocation machine that is the Texas A&M Catholic Student Center.
