WHITE HOUSE REVOKES RIGHT OF CONSCIENCE FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS WHO REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN ABORTIONS

Late last week President Barack Obama indicated he will rescind the pro-life conscience protections for medical personnel instituted in the last days of the Bush Presidency.

What this EO did was protect those who are morally and/or ethically against abortions/euthanasia/infanticide/morning after pill from participating without fear of repercussions or losing their jobs or disciplinary action.

The White House is asking for public comment due by April 9th, so please voice your opinion.

It’s important Obama hears how people feel about this. I think we all should remind that choice means CHOOSING NOT TO DO SOMETHING we may be morally/ethically against as well as CHOOSING to do it. If this protection is rescinded, it may have a lot of serious repercussions and would be against the constitution and the freedom of all Americans to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I doubt he’d take my protest as I’m Australian, but this is religious persecution.

Thanks for posting that link, I have already signed an electronic petition regarding this on the Susan B Anthony website but I will do this too, he probably isnt going to give a rip what I think and I am American but I think my opinion will hold as little weight as Trishies woiuld but we can`t let that keep us from raising our voices wherever and whenever we can.

I’ve read the text of the Rescission Proposal and this is what I understood: the so-called Church Laws and Weldon Ammendment already prescribed that no healthcare worker should be coerced to perform abortions or sterilizations against his/her conscience. President Bush’s executive order only added to this that Clinics and Hospitals should be certified to comply with these laws. Opponents of the Executive Order assert that this will hinder access to “healthcare services” (I read this to mean access to abortions and sterilizations) in rural areas and by poor women. Bush’s Executive Order should be rescinded in order to ensure continued access to “healthcare services” (=abortions and sterilizations) in rural areas and by poor women.

I work in a hospital. No week goes without us getting bugged and required to participate in various activities and training meant to ensure that we are in compliance with the laws and regulations for patient privacy, sexual harassment and hostile workplace atmosphere (discrimination based on race and sexual orientation), information security, safe laboratory practice, and fire hazard regulations.

What I learned from this Rescission Proposal, by applying its logic in these other areas, is this:

-having laws of patient privacy is good. Enforcing them or asking my hospital to get certified for compliance with these laws is bad. Why? Because it would hinder …breaches of patient privacy. And any such attempts at enforcement or certification of compliance should be rescinded in order to ensure continued access to …breaches of patient privacy.

-having laws against sexual harassment and hostile workplace environment is good. Certifying your Institution for compliance with these laws is bad. You risk actually reducing the likelihood of a hostile workplace environment and you hinder the access of horny bullies to colleagues and subordinates of the opposite sex!

-having laws for information security is good. Certifying your computer system for compliance with these laws is bad, because you hinder the access of hackers to your patients’ social security numbers and medical histories. Surely you want to ensure continued access of hackers to such information!

-having laws for safe laboratory practice and against fire hazards is good. Enforcing them and certifying your facility for compliance with the same laws is bad. After all, you don’t want to risk doing anything that would hinder laboratory accidents and catastrophic fires from happening.

Finally, we got a Government that understands how to fix our problems. I feel so safe and relieved now.

Is this the regulatory law you are talking about? If so, they have cleverly disguised the word “conscience”. Rescission of the Regulation entitled “Ensuring That Department of Health and Human Services Funds Do Not Support Coercive or Discriminatory Policies or Practices in Violation of Federal Law”

Sue W., thank you for posting this. What a good way to let people know, & to encourage people to get involved. It seems as though campaigns like the postcards for FOCA had an effect, so hopefully this can be stopped.

I just sent my e-mail. After reading all of the great posts here, I think it might be helpful to emphasize that our concern is also with hospitals & institutions being forced to provide “services”. I tried to be secular & scientific since it is the Dept. of Health & Human Services. I will forward it to people I know once my daughter comes home, I’m clueless on the computer…😊 Btw, would you suggest forwarding the e-mail that I sent, or something else?

Anyway, thanks again for this. I was so upset when I 1st heard about this, & now I feel like I’ve at least done something.
