Volunteered Myself

I volunteered myself - Myself and another young woman are going to be teaching a confirmation class together. We are in a small community in the Florida Keys and I am very excited but neither she nor I have done this. I just have 11 years in the military - granted I am not sure which is more disciplined privates in the service or 8th and 9th graders. Just kidding. Any help, prayers, suggestions, whatever, that anyone has would be great. I will find out more on Sunday. Easy to say - I did cross the River in 2008 and it is my way of staying connected and getting more connected in a new community.

can’t find the smiley for doing cartwheels but that is me, congratulations for responding to the call. If you are new to the faith, or new to deepening understanding of the faith, there is nothing better than teaching young people to help you grow. Your learners are lucky to have you.

I told our HS catechists Wed. evening at our meeting that we still need one person on the team, but that we should pray for the Holy Spirit to send that person to us. She walked in Thursday afternoon 5 minutes before the office closed. She is competent, experienced and an excellent catechist. The Holy Spirit – he cares enough to send the very best, and I am sure your parish is experiencing the same thing.

That is exciting! Teaching is tons of fun. It is a great way to both grow in your own faith and help others to grow in theirs.

I taught religious education one year and I may do it again someday. I used the book given to me as a means, but not an end. The first half of the class was basic instruction and the second half was in game show fashion. Kids respond very well to organized competition. Make it exciting AND informative. You can do it like Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune or the progressive questioning used in “millionare” or Smarter than a fifth grader. Or an original idea of your own. Good luck and God bless.

Spend some time - start today! prayerfully reading the Catechism section on Confirmation. It starts at 1285 and helps us know what Confirmation IS and eliminates those false ideas that have crept in… (it is not a kid making an adult profession of faith for example )
