Volunteering at public school

It seems she doesn’t send her son to public school because she does not want him exposed to what the public school teaches. It is her right as a parent in the United States, to raise her child as she sees fit. Further, as a Catholic, she takes seriously her duty as first teacher of her child, and canon law which holds her responsible for his catechesis and formation.

There are many reasons why my children did not and will not necessarily be attending public schools. I don’t want them exposed to Planned Parenthood and so-called “safe” sex, for one. It is a view which Catholics cannot hold.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Realistically you would probably disagree with the attitudes and opinions that many Catholics hold.

My point being, you can’t isolate yourself from different opinions and ways of living.

I can’t agree more. I was not raised catholic. The one thing I notice is that catholics are afraid of hearing anything contrary to their own way of thinking. Is it because the whole belief system falls apart when you hear that many people don’t believe what you do? Why are you pro life if you won’t let your kids experience life?

Thank you, and I agree. We have friends at the public school whom we respect. But that doesn’t mean I respect the public school nor the notion of soliciting volunteers from a catholic teen organization for the public school. I think the youth leader should be educating the teens on the ways that society tries to downplay religion so they can be on the look out for those things. By actively participating in anti catholic organizations (Day of Silence, NEA) public schools lead away from the catholic faith.

Is there a better way to evangelize…than to attend a secular institution and demonstrate your faith in action?

Common sense view:

I don’t see what keeping teens away from a public school will accomplish…will you be able to keep them away from those attitudes and opinions for the rest of their lives?

It’s out there whether you like it or not.

Their teachers are member of the NEA, which promotes reproductive choice (among other things) the district participated in National Day of Silence (promoting the homosexual agenda) and from the families I know who send their children to those schools, there is a definate anti-Christian sentiment.

You don’t know for a fact that every teacher is a NEA member, oftentimes (although it depends on the laws in the state you live in) there are a few teachers who aren’t union or NEA members for the same reasons you mentioned. Also, in some states that membership is required you can (for moral/ religious reasons) contribute 100% of your dues toward local school charities (for example a fund to buy school supplies for needy students) and nothing toward the union’s immoral activities.

A person can be a public school teacher and a good Catholic. Although it’s not always easy.

While every teacher at the school may not be a member of the NEA, it does not change the fact that the school is affiliated with the NEA. I don’t understand at all why a non faith based teacher’s union would have a position on reproduction, especially one that is so contrary to giving every child a chance at an education.
