I’m not sure if this goes into the right thread and mods, you can move it if you need to.

Anyway, since the weather is supposed to be crummy tomorrow (thank you mid-west storms for sending them MY way ) I decided to go to Mass this evening with my umbrella and jacket–just in case. 😉

Mass went on like usual and I got my bulletin like I always do. I noticed that they are advertising this summer’s VBS for the parish. Is it already that time of year??

Growing up, my mom would send my sister (eventually sisters ;)) and I to various week long bible camps/schools -]just to get rid of us/-] er…to keep us busy and entertained! 😃 When I got “too old” to be a student, I started to volunteer. I enjoyed it (for the most part). Some kids were great, others drove me nuts.

Anyway, it’s been a while since I’ve been to church but I started going back again. The reason for my rambling? It seems like my church will be having VBS at the most convenient time for me. When is it? July 12-16…in the evening hours!! PERFECT for a workin’ gal like me! 😃

I’m leaning towards sending an e-mail expressing my interest but a couple of things are making me hesitate.
  1. I’m still so new to the church that I haven’t had 1-on-1 time with a priest or deacon
  2. I’m immunosuppressed, my health always comes first, but I still want to be of some assistance
P.S. I looked up the other two near by churches in the area and grrr…they’re during different weeks in the morning.

All I’ll say is that the church is in desperate need of young people who are single, cool, and not the spooky looking, “Children-of-the-Corn-attire-wearing” Catholics.

Go for it! You’d be a great role model for them!

Remember this, and you’ll see: God never lets himself be outdone in generosity.

Anyway, do this for God, not for yourself and you’ll see what I get in return.

Around here, we have to do background checks on everyone who wants to be anywhere near children, so if you’re considering volunteering, I suggest getting started pronto, so there’s time to get the paperwork completed.

Thanks for the heads up! 👍

I agree with the others. Definitely volunteer—the kids need good role models. Here we require background checks and a child safety class for anyone who will be working with children.

Regarding the physical difficulties, just be honest when you talk to whoever is in charge of volunteers. I’m sure, if necessary, that they can put you in a place where if you couldn’t follow through it wouldn’t be detrimental to the program.

Yes volunteer. I have my last class for Confirmation candidates tomorrow. My first year donig this. And I regret not looking into it earlier. It is awesome that you are considering this. Do it please God is calling you to do this. Or, why would you consider it???
So awesome that you want to help.
God bless and have fun.

So, I wrote an email to a friend of mine in the church about all of the things I thought we should be doing.
She forwarded it on to father.
Now I’m DIRECTOR of VBS. i didn’t even know what ‘vbs’ was until two weeks ago.
here’s what I know:
In every single volunteer organization I’ve been a part of 20% of the people pull 80% of the weight. The church is no different. PLEASE BE part of the 20%!!
This will be a great way for you to meet the active people in your parish by the way so don’t worry about being new. The only thing better than a volunteer is a NEW volunteer!! You won’t stay new for very long, believe me!
Also, considering your condition…only you know what is reasonable and what is not. The games are mostly outdoors. Maybe you coudl work with that group? Or with the older kids rather than the pre-schoolers? If working directly with the kids is just gonig to be something you can’t do because of your condition, I can assure you there is LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of prep work leading UP to VBS, so your help would always be welcome there.
Best wishes!

I sent the e-mail last night expressing my interest. I’ll let’cha know what they say. 👍

P.S. I did not mention the immunosupression. I just feel that it’s too soon and I don’t want to scare them. 😃

BUMP!!!

I finally got a response!! A meeting for volunteers will take place soon (date TBD). Anyhoo, YAY!!! :extrahappy:

ask your doctor, kids are carriers of everything and if you want to get sick work with kids. even if you can’t help with the actual VBS sessions you can help by phone calling, processing registrations, typing and making copies, decorations, props, prizes and other gimmicks, or snacks. Cleanup is also a major need as everybody evaporates the day after VBS is over.
One of our regulars is home with a new baby so she is doing the iron-on transfers for the T-shirts

welcome Home!
