I’m a teenager and I’m on a trip with my family to New Orleans. We are a very Catholic family so naturally we’ve avoided the voodoo stuff that is associated with the New Orleans, but today we went to a gift shop and my mom let my siblings pick out these little string dolls as souveniers. I don’t really know how to explain it, but they seemed more like toys than actual voodoo dolls. I don’t know how this stuff works but I don’t think they’re connected to any spirits or anything like that but you can never be sure. I’m very scrupulous so I tend to correct my parents a lot and my mom usually gets mad at me and says that she has her own conscience and doesn’t need me to be her moral compass so I didn’t try and correct her on this because I wasn’t sure if it was wrong or not and I knew she’d be upset with me. The dolls resemble characters from movies and video games and say that they are supposed to bring good luck to the person who has them. My parents and siblings do not believe that they will bring them good luck and instead bought them because they seemed like a cute and fun souvenir. Is it dangerous to keep these dolls or should we throw them out? I’m going to have a very hard time of disposing of them because my siblings really like them and will be upset if I get rid of them.

Have they been used in voodoo rituals or “blessed” by a voodoo priest or any such thing?

Then I personally see nothing wrong with it, so long as there is no temptation for anybody to use them in any sort of voodoo ceremony.

Ask your confessor what he thinks, just to be sure, and be fully obedient to whatever he says.

This.

I think I know the figurines you’re talking about, they’re meant to be lighthearted fun.

I’ve known some people from Haiti, they were Christians , but for them, voodoo was no joke.

OTOH, voodoo is not a corporate, mass produced thing, either.

You’re probably fine.

Thank you so much, this really calmed me down. Not just about this situation but about the subject of voodoo entirely which has been a major source of anxiety for me during this trip.
