I have a question. This past Sunday, my finance and I went to mass, and because one of my friends was very badly injured (put into a medical coma because of bleeding on his brain and part of his left side being crushed) she asked me if we wanted to light a votive candle. I became Catholic about two years ago and had only walked by them and also seen it on lots of movies. I did do research and understand the act of doing it and what it represents but my question is what should be said. Are there any specifics, or just give a prayer. Just wondering, thank you.

It’s most certainly a private devotion. The candle represents your continuing prayer for your private intention. Light one and drop a donation so that the candles can be put out on a regular basis.

Any prayer you do after lighting a candle will be acceptable, and admirable.

Many times I will say an Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be…maybe repeat them 3 times and at other times, I have a conversation with God explaining what I am hoping he can do to intercede in my prayer to him.

Sometimes when I light a candle, it’s a prayer of thanksgiving, not just a petition prayer.

Whatever you do is between you and God.
