I read in the Catholic Encyclopedia that a Vow of Chastity is rarely dispensed, even if it is a simple vow,it requires a grave reason:
newadvent.org/cathen/15511a.htm
(under the title ‘Vow of Chastity’

I dont understand this. Isnt it treated like any other vow with equal reasons to be dispensed or does the reason have to only be gravely serious (especially considering it’s a simple vow)?

The Catholic Encyclopaedia – an excellent reference work – is from 1917. Therefore, any differences you note from current law and practise may well be due to the date.

Leave the enciclopedia alone and talk to a priest.

It is not a personal situation. Just researched that topic and found this information a little surprising.

I don’t understand what a vow of chasity is or how you dispense it in your faith, but the Apostle Paul discusses the topic in I Corinthians 7 when he tells the church that regarding their question they asked in their letter to him…Yes it si good to abstain from sexual relations (Or to live a velibate life; Greek reads it is good for a man not to touch a woman. But because the church had so much sexual immorality Paul said that they should each one man take one wife and be only with eachother not neglecting to fulfill those needs between them. Then after laying down the logistics of the marriage bed he goes on to add in verse 7 But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. Yet each person has a special gift from God, of one kind or another 8 So I say to those who aren’t married and to widows- it’s better to stay unmarried, just as I am 9 but if they can’t control those passions they should go ahead and marry because its better to marry than to burn with lust. So if that helps you…I discovered God gave me the same gift as Paul (he also speaks about it in various books in more detail) because I have no desire to marry anymore, my drive to passion is gone, and my focus on what I currently am able to do for the Lord is way more fulfilling and time consuming than I would be able to bear should I have a husband or other earthly constraints keeping me tied to worldly affairs before the kingdom of God could be tended to…I didn’t dispense or vow I don’t think.?. But I kept reading the marriage, assumed I was supposed to get married and went through some trials and bumps and I would always from the very first day I began searching god’s word…always pop up the chasity scriptures…finally god worked out my desires and shifted my focus and then I received the gift as mine now just some random verse that did not apply to me LOL…I have nothing against men, or marriage…nor do I struggle with celebacy…god just changed me around to be that way…hope that helps sorry I don’t know more about vows or their origin to resource link for you. God bless

As was noted such is from the turn of the previous century. But even then one must distinguish between public vows and private vows.

A private vow can be dispensed by ones Pastor (et al).
