My friends wanted to play this game called Cards Against Humanity tonight. I agreed not knowing anything about the game. It turned out to be the most vulgar game ever. It was disgusting, but I didn’t stop playing or say anything because I was afraid. I just moved and don’t know many people. I didn’t want to lose friends. Everyone else was enjoying the game. What should I have done? Was it a mortal sin for me to continue to play such a vulgar, impure game?

It’s OK man, relax. If you were uncomfortable playing that, just don’t do it again. Live and learn, you know? 🙂

Pretty disgusting game. I’ve never played it, but I’ve seen it.

I don’t think this is a case of mortal sin, but let’s take a moment to review the three conditions (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church):
For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.”
I don’t think a tasteless party game is grave in itself. If you were just playing the cards and not behaving in such a way as to magnify the impact, for example, making lewd remarks or gestures (Relax, I am sure you were not doing that!), then I think you are okay as far as gravity is concerned.

Full knowledge? Well, at first you did not know anything about the game. As the game proceeded, you gradually became aware that something was amiss, but perhaps hoped it would get better, or hoped that it would end soon. Probably by the end you had knowledge.

Deliberate consent? No. Clearly your participation began without deliberation or consent. As the game developed, you were in a pretty awkward position, sort of under social duress, so I think it’s safe to say you did not consent.

You should go to confession anyway. Your mind and spirit may be troubled by this, wondering what you should have done, or could have done. Tell the priest what happened, receive absolution, and that will help to restore your peace of mind.

Also maybe you can figure out what to do the next time someone talks about this game, or gets it out at another gathering. In my opinion, it would be pretty cool to politely voice your objections. You are probably not the only one who regretted playing. Someone is going to respect you if you speak up for what’s right.

May the Holy Spirit assist and guide you always toward a life of peace and love.

If it made you seriously uncomfortable, it probably isn’t for you. And that’s totally okay! I love horror movies. I don’t even get scared by them anymore. Now I’ve started to look for funny or absurd scenarios (the first *Insidious *movie was absolutely full of them).

It’s a game about humor. Crude and vulgar, but also ironic and situational humor. I will admit though, I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing it with strangers, since I’m not comfortable around strangers in the first place. I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable with the inevitably lewd jokes that would come out of playing that game. But if I’m hanging out with my friends back home, I can barely breathe from laughing so hard. Is it tactless? Yeah, probably, but it’s funny and I get to spend time with my friends.

If it made you feel uncomfortable, bring that up next time. You mentioned not knowing many people where you live yet. But that means they probably don’t know you very well either. You have a right to voice your opinion, and if you’re uncomfortable, by all means tell them such. Most people will understand, and if not, they might not be the best group to befriend in the first place.

I doubt that you’ve sinned by playing it though. As someone else suggested, talk to a priest if you’re concerned, but I wouldn’t think you’re guilty of sin because of Cards Against Humanity.

First and foremost, the most important thing, if is is a mortal sin or not.

To the op, go to confession and ask a good Priest about that one. And don’t worry too much about your friends. The state of your soul comes first, learn to stand up against them (or to retire from the situation) when they engage in bad things.
