Sometimes I see parishes with monstrances holding the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. Isn’t that wrong, because the Body is meant to be consumed. I can see how it’s fine in like Laciano, but?

Certainly it’s possible that you are observing and abuse, but what you are seeing is the practice of Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. It is allowed and practiced widely, particularly on the first Friday of the month.

Im happy to explain. I have been a scheduled person at Adoration for years. At Mass we consume the host (Jesus) to have him with us when we leave. Its strength for us to listen to the Holy Spirit within us. Now since Mass is around an hour, we receive the host but consume it quickly, pray, dismissal. Many people would love more time to sit and ponder what is actually happening…the consecration of bread to the visible eye becoming Jesus, God, Son & Holy Spirit. That is where Adoration comes in. A huge consecrated host is with the monstrance on an altar. Being a Catholic we believe that the true souldand divinty and physical prescence is in that room, we wont leave Jesus alone. At my church their is a chapel just for adoration. People are scehduled to sit with Jesus every hour of every day. He is never left alone. I am one of those people. I sit for one hour the same time and day for years. It is amazing because you are truly and really gazing upon Christ. But you can stay as long as you want and go as often as you want. Its very good for people requesting in prayer spiritual communion when they cant really recieve.

Catholics believe that the Holy Eucharist is Jesus, fully present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. If there are any consecrated wafers or pieces of bread left after distributing Holy Communion, they are placed in the Tabernacle for safe keeping. Near the Tabernacle is an Eternal Flame – a candle that burns always to remind us that Jesus is present in the Tabernacle. This reserved sacrament is then available for people who are sick and unable to attend Mass to receive Jesus. It is also available for those who are near death and receive the last sacraments, including their last communion, called “viaticum” which literally means “food for the journey.”
Now because Jesus is truly present in the Tabernacles of every Catholic Church throughout the world, people come at all times of the day and night to pray before His Holy Presence. Many parishes have set times for Eucharistic Adoration, where the Host, Which is Jesus, is placed in a Monstrance, or special holder where the Host is visible and is then placed on the altar for Adoration. There are many Catholic Churches that offer Perpetual Adoration, which means that Jesus is always present in a chapel in the Monstrance for people to pray to and adore Him around the clock.
Because of our great reverence for Jesus in this Sacrament, during Adoration time Jesus is never to be left alone. Someone is always present keeping Him company. This is also done to be sure people do not steal the Blessed Sacrament and defile Jesus or use the Sacred Host in satanic rituals.
Something that really got me thinking about Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, at a time when I wasn’t sure what I believed, was the fact that those involved in the occult only break into Catholic Churches for the Sacred Host in order to defile it. I remember hearing author and convert Kimberly Hahn talking about this very thing on a radio program. She spoke of how, in the bible, the demons always recognized Jesus for who He truly is. So when those involved in the occult wish to defile Jesus, they don’t break into a Lutheran or Methodist or Non-Denominational church to steal their wafers or bread. They know that Jesus is truly present only in the Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Catholic Church.

Wow, those were great replies. I am often told that Eucharistic Adoration can be very nourishing spiritually but have never taken the opportunity to really participate. I am currently reading a very interesting book titled “Eucharistic Miracles” by Joan Carroll Cruz that tells of many instances of the Real Presence.

It is never ending. People come to adore 24/7, so it is always out. And then there is the scheduled person who not only sits with the eucharist so Jesus is never alone, we watch and protect it. The chapel Im in is locked. There is a code provided by the church for people who want to attend adoration. But in case there are times that other people dont go, there is at least the scheduled person. So, the eucharist is always displayed, their is a scheduled person always present, and then of course anyone else visiting. The chapel never closes, so the host is always out. There is a rule of silence though because people there are usually in deep prayer.Its wonderful! Ive done it for years.

Who watches it during the night. I thought that the host had to be eaten within a certain amount of time. I’m not arguing with the practice, because hey guess what I’m Catholic, but I’m new to alot of things like this. I haven’t even been Confirmed.

The Sacred Host does have to be consumed within a certain amount of time (a week or so); so the priest will consume it at a Mass and replace it with a newly consecrated one.
Places where adoration is 24/7 have people scheduled all through the night. Some saintly souls even take 2 or 3 hours in a row in the middle of the night! If, for some reason, there is a time when nobody is present, the last person will repose the Blessed Sacrament into the Tabernacle and blow out the candles on the altar before they leave.
I remember a beautiful story about a mother of several children who had an hour in the middle of the night. She was confessing to her priest that she would often fall asleep during her time and felt so guilty about it. The priest asked her “Do you mind when your children fall asleep in your arms?” She replied, “No, in fact it’s one of my favorite times to just hold them and look at them.” The priest said “That is how Our Lord feels when you fall asleep in His presence!”

Welcome to the family. I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions. Im a Third Order Dominican( started in the 1200’s from St Dominic). The purpose of this order is to teach about Christ and the church, and defend them.We help convert people as well as bring people back home if they have strayed away. There seems to be more fighting than knowledge.
Even during the night there is a scheduled adorer. Once a chapel is opened for the purpose of adoration, they need to get volunteers to sit with Jesus. Every hour has to be covered, like a job. Some people like the middle of the night, they are the night owls. So evey hour, no matter what time, someone is scheduled to be there. I cant leave until the next scheduled person arrives. This guarantees that he is never alone.Besides the scheduled person, many people are in and out to pray, worship, read, etc… You would be suprised how many people go during all hours.
The host has to be eaten right away at Mass for protection of Christ. Shortly after communion Mass is dismissed. The church needs to be sure that you are not going home with a host. The eucharistic ministers need to see you put it in your mouth so they are sure you eat it. Plus, if you eat it right away there is less of a chance of dropping it on the way back to the pew or sitting in the pew.
In adoration there is an altar with the monstrance on it. You are only allowed to be within a certain amount of feet to it. This is also for protection. We cant take the chance of somebody walking up and handling it. So basically your seated in a pew or chair ( I sit on the floor becasue I want too) and feet away is an altar with the monstrance. People pray, do chaplets or the rosary, read religious books, just relax and ponder things…but quiet.
In a church is the tabernacle where remaining hosts are put that were already consecrated. It has a key and gets locked. It is reopened to be used at the next Mass. You can do the same thing there but an actual monstrance is nice because its tangible, you can see it.

As far as I know the adoration host is around indefinitely. I never thought to ask if it is switched . I dont think it is because the logical answer would be…It is Jesus, no longer bread so it wont go bad. As long as no one is consuming it, there is no need to switch it. Consecration happens at Mass because the host gets all used up by the crowd. But being at adoration it is for worship only, I dont think there is a need to keep putting a newly consecrated host in there. If they do switch it, I would get they use it for Mass.

The Host is required to be reserved in every church and is to be renewed frequently. Canon Law does not give a time frame and it is probably somewhat flexible depending on the conditions. Some climates are very humid so the Host would have to be renewed more frequently. All of the Precious Blood must be consumed at the Mass at which it is consecrated. It is not permitted to reserve the Blood.

I have a question. I’m not arguing but. Didn’t Christ institute the Eucharist for us to consume, not just to worship? Is it ok to keep around a host that is to not be eaten?

Christ instituted the Eucharist so that He could be with us physically always. He did intend for us to consume His Body and Blood, however I am certain that He would not be opposed to us worshipping Him in this manner. He is God, and so it is appropriate to simply spend time in His presence.

A host can only be given out at Mass for consumption or kept for Adoration within the church. We are not allowed to bring one home ,for adoration at home. That is a serious offense.
Christ in his love wanted to be with mankind, long after his ascension. He wanted us to remember his passion. It also is his final way of becoming so vulnerable to us. He comes to us, whole, with bread and wine. At mass " do this in memory of me, this is my body which has been given up for you, this is my blood which has been shed so sins may be forgiven do this in memory of me"
1- He wants us to remember his death and crucifixion often, because we love Him
2- he wants to be with us through the holy spirit and in the form of bread and wine because he loves us dearly
3- he wants us to offer the bread and wine, body and blood to God Almighty, to have it as a sacrifice on behalf of our sins
4-he wants all these things and a way to keep constant prescence with us. many saints have said that the greatest devotion is adoration. We care for something so small because we know it is Jesus. We believe his words no matter how far fetched. We spend time outside of Mass, so we are the more devoted.
The best verse about the eucharist is in the bible in the book of John , chapter 6. It is the ultimate verses and good to defend communion against protestants.
