Wait, I don't have to fast Sunday during Lent?

Okay, so I gave up my Xbox 360 for Lent and I just heard that since Sunday is a day of celebration and not counted as a day of Lent, I can still use whatever I gave up. Is this true? If so, that would be awesome!

Anyway, I have my last exam in 40 minutes. Wish me luck

EDIT: I just realized Lent ends next week. Ah well 🤷
 
Yes, every Sunday is the celebration of the Resurrection, therefore, it’s not a day of fasting or penance. Whatever an Xbox360 is I’m sure God was pleased you gave it up for Lent. You simply won’t have to give it up next Lenten Sundays. All the best on your exams! You have my prayers for a good outcome (as long as you studied, that is 😉) 👍

Yesterday was a First Class Feast, so you could have played your XBox.

Holy Thursday is a First Class Feast as well, I think. 😃

But, I think you still have to fast on Sundays.
 
As I understand it, the decision to “Fast” or not to “Fast” is voluntary and not required. So, It’s really up to you whether or not you decide to fast on Sundays. I believe this is my second or third Lenten season on this forum and there’s usually dozens of threads on this and many other Lenten observence rules and rituals. There are certainly many that believe the duty to “Fast” during lent is absolute. My research tells me that it is not a requirement. I will be happy to hear my bretheren provide evidence to the contrary or in support.

Just so we’re clear. I always “Fast” during Lent. I am a cradle Catholic that was raised to believe that it was a requirement and that Sundays are included.

Also, Lent ends on Wednesday. Maundy Thursday begins the Holy Tridium which ends on Holy Saturday. Easter Sunday begins the Octave of Easter. So, Easter Sunday is the beginning of Easter. Now, please don’t be like my wife. I’m not suggesting that you should give up your “Fast” on Wednesday at sundown. On the Contrary, I believe that the Holy Tridium rasies the stakes in terms of opportunity to cleanse, repent, and share in Christ’s passion. If anything, we should increase or “Fast”. My opinion.

Trivia Question: What does the term Maundy mean?

No. You don’t have to fast on Sundays in Lent or any other Church season. 🙂 One may do so if one likes, but it’s not mandatory.
 
You mean I could have given up my XBOX 360 versus chocolates, pastries and cake? I’ll remember that for next year. 😃

After some research I believe maundy comes from a Latin word which means commanded and of course on Holy Thursday our Lord instituted the Sacrament of his body and blood at which we commanded us to “love one another as I have loved you”

Depends. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, Lent has already ended. We have begun Great Week, which is a separate occasion by itself. I believe the Roman Catholic Lent ends on Wednesday, with the Triduum beginning on Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday.

              Yes, Sunday is a day of celebration and we are free from fasting... biblically they were released to celebrate the Joy of a Bride and Groom... or specific feast and celebration unto the LORD,   The Sabbaths, and holy days   were of assembly in which they studied, discussed God and what He has done for them in their daily lives.    Days of celebration were not absent of assembly or reflection.    In other words we were to fix our thoughts on spiritual things, which fasting strengthened us in( i.e. spiritual over material).
X-Box I dunno… certainly not a sin, but is playing an x-box on Sunday during a lent in the spirit and tradition of the Church? Usually your by yourself (Isolated) or with one other person, where is the reflection? the time out with family and friends, community? Where do you find the Father ,Son and Holy Spirit in an x-box or time for refection of God in the Trinity ?

I think the fast ends with the Beginning of Holy Thursday mass(i could be wrong:o) But their is of course the mandatory fast on Good Friday from gross amounts of food and meat which i think is supposed to be carried to the Saturday night vigil mass. but i could be wrong so, feel free to correct
 
I always feel like I am cheating if I use the Sunday exemption so I just don’t do it.

If any ceremonial observance would detract from the joy of a wedding feast, it was not required. Jesus says that His followers should have this kind of happiness.

You aren’t because the Sundays in Lent aren’t counted in the 40 days of Lent. Look at your calendar and count how many days, excepting Sundays there are–it’s 40. So, the Sundays are not a part of our Lenten penance. Besides this, Sundays are Solemnities and all Solemnities are celebrated with feasting and joy. It’s the days before that are the days of fasting and penance and in Lent we have a whole 40 days “before”, so to speak, in which to do our penance. So, you are definitely not cheating by celebrating the Sundays in Lent as they were meant to be. It’s never wise to do more than the Church prescribes without spiritual direction. It can lead to spiritual pride, and that would be much worse in the long run. 🙂

I fully understand that I am able to do it, but I think it is a matter of the types of things I give up for lent that influence my decision. If I gave up wine, or sweets then having some on Sunday would a sort of joyful feast celebration. However I tend to give up things like video games or internet sites that don’t really relate to my development of faith at all and are really just meant as a measure of killing boredom.

Fasting is only required on two days a year - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Do not confuse fasting with abstinance. Abstaining from meat is required on these two days plus all Fridays of Lent.
 
As for sunday, i have decided to begin eating regulary again and ending all aspects of the fast after High Mass, a full 20 decade rosary prayer in the afternoon and the eve prayers.

But this is of my free will. As for food fasting, i discussed this with my priest as i got very ill with a powerful flu last week (and it still is not over), but i try to eat only when the body “screams for food” and drink water or juice.

No soda, Facebook, Twitter, tea, coffee, sweets, movies and festivities are still no-can-do and i will remain so until late sunday eve. I mean, the church asks so little of us, this is the least i can do to show Lord Jesus Christ some respect and dignity thinking of the horrible sufferings He went through for all of us.

That was my three cents for today.
