A waiter in Kansas took to social media after discovering what looked like a generous $20 tip was not legal tender.
For 17-year-old Garret Wayman, the excitement quickly faded when he realized that, not only was the money fake, but it was actually a pre-printed religious message.
Wayman had just finished serving a table at the at the Mulvane “DK” in Kansas, when he spotted what looked like a large bill tucked under the ketchup.
Unfolded, however, Wayman noticed it was actually just a bible pamphlet recommending he seek “faith thru Jesus Christ.”

Servers rely on tips, as generally their wages are not very high.
It was wrong to deliberately refuse to tip and leave a bible tract instead.
There is a possibility though that the customers paid with a credit card and included the real tip in the bill.

It seems like every time there is an odd tip issue, it’s front-page news.

As far as tipping goes, it’s just not fun for me anymore in places that use tips as an excuse to pay workers a low wage.

One Catholic commentator once said “I don’t mind tipping for good service, but I don’t like having to tip in order to fulfill an obligation for a just wage”.

I think there could be more discussion on this in terms of how restaurants operate.

he is only 17 and maybe hasn’t been a server very long. I would be a little disappointed too at that age if I thought I had received a $20 tip and it was a religious pamphlet. I am wondering if the purposefully published the pamphlet to look like legal tender to grab the attention or if it was a joke. I didn’t go to the link so I don’t know the whole story.

I loudly and openly shame people who don’t tip. That’s bad enough.

But to make a low wage worker think that he came into a little good fortune only to find out he was left an ad is cruel and heartless.

I agree, though I think that there would be a pushback against changing the current system because the number of honest people generally still do outnumber the dishonest and for those who are dishonest, they usually still tip in order to avoid looking trashy. Many if not most servers make more money from tips than they would from the minimum wage they would probably get if paying minimum wage was required.

I worked as a waitress for exactly 2 weeks before I quit because of my clumsiness. I received one of these; they’re actually very common. They make them look like money so you bother to pick it up and read it. The one I received said something like “You’re lucky! What you hold in your hand is more valuable than money! It an invitation to hear the word of Jesus Christ”.

I have to say, I agree with this completely. I’ve left small tips before if the service was truly terrible, but I always tip. Everyone should always tip; if you got anything more than a glass of water then you should leave a tip.

This is a really mean trick to play on someone, and probably did more harm to the person’s faith than good.

Most employers don’t use tips as a reason for lower wages. In many states, it is mandated that servers receive a lower wage, because they receive tips.

What some employers do, and many don’t realize is…if you put the tip on your credit card, many establishments take the credit card fee out of the server’s tip, instead of the establishment paying that transaction fee.

Tips should really be made in cash.

I would agree the obligation of a just wage along with growing income disparity between the rich and poor and the middle and between corporate America and it’s workers is something which warrants discussion and hopefully it is something that will be strongly addressed in the 2016 US Presidential race. The Democrats at least already have done so in debates and I am sure they will continue to speak on this as the moral issue that it is. Democratic Presidential contender, Bernie Sanders, even went to conservative Christian evangelical Liberty University, founded by the late Jerry Falwell, to address the moral implications. To paraphrase Bernie, there are issues such as on women’s reproductive rts and SSM, on which we may never agree. Yet there are other moral values beyond those. The Pope has even spoken on not counting non negotiable values with our fingers.

The saddest part of this is the person that left this note was probably one of those overly demanding customers that will run a server to death, simply because they can.

I was a bartender for years, and people soon realized that if you keep your bartender happy (tips), then you would be happy your entire time there.

If you tap your empty beer bottle, can, or glass on the bar to get the bartender’s attention, chances are, you’re going to be very thirsty by the time you get your next drink.

If you holler from one end of the bar to the other to get my attention, chances are, you’re going to wait.

Not tipping after your second drink, you’re going to get very thirsty before you get your third.

A good bartender already knows your drink is getting low, either by seeing your glass, or by the sound it makes when you put it down. A good bartender will already approach you before your drink is empty, as long as you treat them right.

The same goes for food servers.

Needless to say, many people couldn’t deal with the constant multi-tasking involved (it’s not like you are their only table),let alone carrying large tray full of food for hours on end. Also having to deal with the public in a courteous manner, all while wanting to drop a tray of hot soup on someone’s lap.

Next time you go out to eat, or party on a Friday, or Saturday night, sit back for a few minutes, and actually watch what these people go through in a shift.

I think many will be surprised.

These are the kind of people that servers/bartenders deal with on a daily basis. It is an interesting read to say the least. nydailynews.com/news/national/woman-threw-fit-patron-heart-attack-job-article-1.2489904

Tipping = sharing = communism!

🍿
Were you being facitious or do you believe, as a Catholic, that your church and it’s leader on earth, Pope Francis, opposes tipping and sharing? I’m just going to go with you being facitious and then you went for the popcorn.

Yeah, it was definitely a joke.

I highly doubt that this is true. Many states ALLOW the employers to pay their servers below minimum wage. That doesn’t mean they are mandated to do so. I’ve never heard of any state having a law that requires a maximum wage.

LOL Kansas represent.

I’m not surprised. Kansas has a long and rich history of people using faith as a way to excuse all manner of despicable behavior. I can totally believe that someone would namedrop Jesus as a way to justify their cheapness.

I very much doubt that any states mandate lower wages for employees that receive tips. States allow employers to pay a lower wage but allowing is not the same as mandating.

There are two different minimum wage scales in the US. One for people who receive tips regularly, and one for those who do not.

For those who do not receive regular tips. dol.gov/whd/minwage/america.htm

For those who do receive regular tips. dol.gov/whd/minwage/america.htm

Federal law sets the minimum standard that states are required to follow. States are free to expand these minimums, but, are not required to.

So yes, in essence, they are mandated to pay a lesser wage to those people who receive tips regularly.
