Waiting for Jesus? How do you do it?

We wait for Jesus in a few ways. We like to set up the Nativity scene with the crib empty.

We also like to do Advent calendars where you open a flap each day before Christmas.

I was just wondering, what other physical things you like to do at your house as you wait for Jesus to come.

This Christmas just seems especially precious.

We used to have an advent wreath and lit it for meal times.

Lighting of the candles marking each of the 4 Sundays of Advent. I have not actually lit the candles, but i always see them on EWTN during Advent season!

I think the lighting of the Advent candles is a beautiful way to prepare. I have a tiny tabletop Nativity set up, but I always have the Baby lying there for the whole month of December, because I just love to look at a “complete” Nativity. Waiting and setting Him out Christmas Eve is a beautiful idea too, but I’ve just never done it that way. Advent/ Christmas is my favorite time of year, because it’s so beautiful. I suppose a unique way of preparing for the Birth of Christ is to remember that He is coming again (I hope in my lifetime) and in a way, all of us alive today are living what those in the Old Testament lived…waiting for the Messiah. They waited for Him to come a first time, we are waiting for Him to come a second time.

Physical - Lighting the Advent Wreath candles on Sundays helps.

Spiritual - I’m reading Matthew Kelly’s “Rediscover Advent” with it’s daily reflections and of course praying the Liturgy of the Hours and meditating on the readings.

I display statues and icons of the Blessed Virgin holding the Lord by the Christmas tree. it is a nice way to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation
