Walking on red traffic light

This question is maybe a stupid one, but the subject seems so obvious and i just like to hear your wiews and thoughts.

A friend of mine (she used to be religious before) thinks i`m too over-cautious because i do not walk at red traffic light and says: “so? everyone else does”

My thought on this is: this is when the cars drive and if i walk at red, a car could hit me and put my life and health in severe danger. How could that not be a sin? I mean to hurt your own temple.

Am i too over-cautious or what?

Well if you have a good view of the street you’re crossing, and of all the other streets (if you’re crossing at an intersection) and you can clearly see that there are no cars, I don’t see why it would be dangerous to cross just because the light is red. That’s why it’s not against the law.

I’m sure you cross or have crossed other streets that don’t even have traffic lights, right? It just requires you to use your good judgment.

As well as fast feet and reflexes if you’re really that in a hurry (as I’ve done on occasion ).

Where I live it is against the law to cross the street on a red light. Red means stop. I believe that our tax dollars are spent on traffic signals because they are supposed to be followed. I don’t think that it is so much a moral issue as much as a safety issue. If you are in that much of a hurry then leave a little earlier. It’s really not worth the risk.

I’d agree with the second poster, as a Brit - where crossing on the red man is also not against the law, and done by almost everyone including the police (when the road is clear).

However, the OP is from Norway, and it’s possible crossing on the red man is against the law (e.g. the equivalent of a finable misdemeanor) there - like it was in Germany where I lived for a year (and where virtually no-one crosses on the red man), and like jaywalking is in many US states. I’m not sure if committing such misdemeanors would be considered sinful.

Don’t do it in Times Square; you’ll be run over. In some European cities you can do it as long as you do not look at the oncoming cars. (Leave it to the cars to avoid you. If you try to avoid them, it just messes up their driving and increases your chances of being hit.)
