As Music Director at my Anglican Church I hear the mantra all the time. Parishoners visit a different church for a Baptism and experience a rock band doing the whole show. The place is overflowing with young familes. I hear “why can’t we do an all contemporary–I really hate that term–mass?” I’m very flexible with musical styles but draw the line with rock bands. Again, this stuff doesn’t just happen. It must be out of somebodys play book on how to grow a church.

I heard the very same thing at the catechetical conference I recently attended. No call for more sacred music, no, just “how do we make Mass more lively to attract the young?” Are the ‘young’ only interested in music? That’s like feeding them only parsley instead of the main course whose appearance it’s meant to enhance.

Did you happen to attend the catechetical conference in your archdioce in May? Attend the Mass? Not that I want to imply there was anything blasphemous about it, just wondered if you’d attended.

It was the bolded part that made me ask the question because much of the conference was spent reassuring us that that was not happening in Canada.

BTW, do you know of anywhere that the EF is celebrated in Atlantic Canada?

There is a church some distance from Amherst, Nova Scotia nearby Fort Saint Lawrence celebrating the EF Mass.

I also know of two churches along the Ottawa River between Ottawa and Pembrooke that celebrate the EF Mass.

I was familiar with one church in Ottawa that does, St. Clements, an FSSP parish, but not with any in the Atlantic provinces.

I have only walked out of mass once. I was there with my girlfriend at that time (non-Catholic). A child a few rows behind us made some noise during the homily, but in the big picture it wasn’t much. The priest stopped mass to berate the family. I felt bad for the family and embarrassed that I had brought a non-Catholic to such a terrible mass. We were in the middle of a pew, but we stood up and walked out.

We then drove twenty minutes and found another mass. I’d do it again in heartbeat.

as an ex-ELCA lutheran, I’ve had people in ther 50’s and 60’s ( baby boomers ) puzzled with me because I did not like rock contemporary services. I told them, people my age( I was 31 at the time) do not get into this stuff. I just find it offensive that music directors who push this stuff assume that young people are automatically going to like it because their generation did. I was even at a meeting in that church and a “womyn” minister even said for our church to survive, we had to radically change the survice from being stuffy to comtemporary.
