My gosh, nearly everyone I know is sick right now!! And I was just told by my own doctor today that I have walking pneumonia! I knew I was feeling crummy, but this is a bit much. Now I know why I’ve been totally EXHAUSTED.

Is anyone else seeing huge waves of flu and stuff right now? Nearly half my team at work is ill this week. 😦

I have had walking pneumonia twice and the real thing twice (once almost requiring hospitalization). As one of our presidents said, “I feel your pain.” Take care and get a pneumonia shot (if of course your physician approves) along with a flu shot. Once you get pneumonia, your chances of getting it again increase. I even had a pneumonia infection of the eye. It was treatable with antibiotics (thank God!). In my business, we all get sick after term breaks and vacations when students return to campus with strange bacteria and viruses. I keep Purell and disinfectant wipes in my office to use whenever sick students drop off papers or stop by to tell me they are too sick to attend my class. You might want to try these defensive practices as well.

I just got over pneumonia last week. 😦 I was sick for a good five days, and was in the emergency room for about six hours. It wasn’t pleasant! I ended up going home to try to get better, since I get lonely on campus when I’m sick.

My mom had the same thing two weeks before, though her doctor thought it was the flu.

It’s only sinful if it’s accompanied by the boogie woogie flu.

:o

Yeah,it’s REALLY dangerous, and if not immediately isolated in a hospital ward, it can spread like wildfire with a population already coming down with influenza. If you’ve had different forms of pnemococcus infection more than once, definitely check with your doc about getting pneumovax2 and please, always encourage people, including yourself, to get their flu vax too! (Presuming no albumin allergies and such if that’s an issue! If so, they may have a small stash of hypoallergenic shots for just such people too. ;))

I’ve had pneumonia 3 times, both walking and the totally incapacitated, coughing up red-streaked green kind, and intend to get the vax for it next year, since as I’m getting older and live in a far colder climate now…yeah, I better! I am NOT hanging around for round four to throw me into the bleachers! Oh, and keep in mind Pneumovax is fine to take once, but not twice, okay? It covers a wide spectrum of those nasties, but another dose can very very hazardous. Flushots though - get em every year, don’t’ wuss out-it’s a quick, easy stick, no problemo. You’re saving your own life and potentially those of many others!

Whoops, the above post was from me and not my spouse - just woke up and forgot to relog! My apologies!

I think I’ll break down and try taking the flu shot next year. In the past I had a pretty bad reaction to thimerasol, the preservative used in the shot. But that was in a contact lens solution when I was 17, so maybe I will be ok with the shot. My doctor said I can try it, I just need to get brave. :o

As for the pneumonia vax, what about us Catholic girls who do not use birthcontrol and have a possibility of pregnancy? Is it safe to take still? I’ll have to ask doctor. He specifically did not give me some drugs, or take a chest x-ray, because I’m not due for a period until the 22nd and he just wanted to be safe. (I love my doctor 🙂 )

So today I just feel like I have a REALLY bad cold that’s getting worse. 😦 I am still having to work (from home, thanks be to God), but will try to sleep as much as I can inbetween stuff.

I’m just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired!!! Otherwise I just feel like I have a cold — with wheezy lungs.

I contracted a sore throat last night. My sinuses ought to be next to go bye-bye for awhile soon following by sneezing and a itchy throat.

Hard not to catch with nearly everyone around me coughing and sneezing themselves!

Nope, the pneumo shot won’t have any effect on fertility…and besides, it’s really not for youngsters anyway unless they’re REALLY susceptible to pneumococcus and have a poorly-developing immune system. It’s really more for older people whose immune systems are showing wear and tear.

The thimerosol issue…hm yeah, ask questions hard. Allergens are no laughing matter, no matter how they’re ingested. If it’s still considered a necessity, make sure they’ve got the ana kit on hand, to prevent real danger, don’t just go to a pharmacy to get it done, okay?

Not all flu vaxes have that though, so again, might not be a problem, but you are much better off safe than sorry, or dead for that matter!

Hm…don’t see why it would, but definitely ask to be sure. That’s what the physicians are there for! I’m pretty sure, though, that an nasty case of pneumonia is considerably more dangerous to a child in utero!

Just learn up a bit what questions to ask, like ‘could this weaken the child’s robustness and lungs? Or possibly damage their own developing immune system?’ They’ll fill you in, and give you the rundown of benefits and risks.

And don’t take MY word for it either! I grew up around Immunologists and biologists of all stripes, medical students and seasoned pros too, plus I’m actually quite a clever chemist myself…but I’m not an MD with the authority to make such decisions - just trying to help out here by helping you help them work out the best solutions. 🙂

Oh gosh no - no worries there!! I would never take medical advice from an internet forum (no offense), just asking for some (name removed by moderator)ut from those who may have had this before. 🙂

Thanks for your comments though, they do help me in thinking about what course of action I might want to take.

None taken at all…I’m just a little more informed than the average bear about such things, which is why I immediately said- get to the doc! And a pulmonary specialist and an OB if you feel it necessary!
