Pentecost2005:
Apparently Wal-Mart and its employees have arrived at mutually satisfactory working arrangements. How is it that the specific details of those arrangements are any of your business? Would you be willing to pay higher prices so that Wal-Mart can subsidize its employees?
Of course I would be willing to pay higher prices so that the Walmart employees would get better health care! Are you trying to tell me that you wouldn’t?
Look abortionists are also just doing their work in a free market, the decision to abort is legal and the mother of the child is also in confidential relationship with the doctor and the specific details are none of your business or mine, however, in my opinion, it’s wrong, so I would be glad to pay higher taxes to support and educate the mother to persuade her have the child and to speak out against the actions. If you see nothing wrong with employee exploitation that’s your issue, not mine, but your arguments don’t hold water, as I have just told you.

I wouldn’t “necessarily” pay higher prices and I’ll tell you why. I stay at home with two kids and while we can make it on one income, many people can’t. Food, housing, gas, along with the additional tax burdens we now face, make everything so much more expensive for the average family than in generations past.

While I feel for everyone who doesn’t have great health coverage, as members of my own family deal with such issues, employees at Wal-Mart should know what they aren’t entitled to the best benefits and pay. That doesn’t mean I side with Wal-Mart 100%, I understand having worked in retail that it’s a difficult job and it’s also difficult for retailers to make profit in that particular business.

Retailing was never historically a “career” unless you were angling for management either through hard work or your choice in education. Unfortunately in this life you get what you ask for, and if your ambition (or unfortunately ability) only takes you to entry-level positions, then you reap those rewards. They admittedly are small.

IMHO we should call upon the medical professionals, insurers, HMO’s, etc., especially those that are religious, to donate their time and resources to provide more services to the disadvantaged.

Wait a minute. You can’t compare the two. In an abortion an innocent, and unwilling participant (the baby) is being killed! The Walmart employee has the free will, freedom and choice to work there or not! The baby doesn’t.
If a Walmart employee doesn’t like the benefit program they can work somewhere else.
The baby can’t “live” anywhere else!

They may have cringed in horror at hearing Christ’s name, but they sure didn’t mind accepting our money because of it.
Please tell me you didnt mean for that to sound as anti-Semitic as it does. The reason it has changed is because society has come to terms with the fact that all of America is not Christian, the same way it came to terms with the fact that African Americans are not inferior.

Dear siamesecat,
Yes, I am puzzled at how you interpreted that. Could you explain how what I said relates to anti-Semitism, in fact anti-anything for that matter, but specifically anti-Semitism.

I hope this wasnt your intention, which is why i said “please tell me its not what you meant”…but wasnt your “but they still take our money” comment a reference to the stereotype that Jews are bankers and greedy and take money?

Wow! That is such a stretch !! I would bet my life’s savings that was sooooo not what was meant! And who said anything about “bankers” - the thread is about Wal-Mart ???

Besides, I don’t think it’s Jewish people that want the phrase “Merry Christmas” removed from the English language. Seems like it’s always the atheists that are crying foul!

Yeah, I have to agree, NO where did I hear anti-semetic anythign in there…just wanted to reassure the poster of that comment that I had to go back and look for myself to see what could possibly have been mistaken for anti-semetic…and I didn’t find it until the other individual specified – and even then thought “what!!!”

Ok im sorry I really thought you were going back to the Jeiwsh stereotype when you said “They may have cringed in horror at hearing Christ’s name, but they sure didn’t mind accepting our money because of it.” Cant you see where i got that? But since you werent trying to say that, I apologize. They dont want the phrase erased, I mean ina church where everyones Christian its fine;saying it to someone you know is christian is fine, but in a place of business where youre supposed to be respectful to all your customers of all different religions, whats wrong with happy holidays? And as an atheist who celebrates Xmas, I have no problem being wished merry xmas or happy holidays.

I don’t see a whole big hullabulloo about being wished happy holidays - -and I don’t think that’s the main argument, driving force behind the outrage – the way the website was set up (they’ve since changed it and apologized) was what really torked some folks off, and understandably – regardless, it’s over now, and changed back. I think what that person was saying was they’re (meaning merchants of any or no faith who are crying “Political correctness”) are perfectly happy to take your money from your Christmas shopping, but they wouldn’t actually risk being “politically incorrect” and admitting it vocally…lol.

It’s like my son’s “Harvest Festival” at school…sigh – what’s next, "Come and get your “Rabbit Festival Baskets, complete with chocolate bunny and fake grass!” come March!!!
