The great free market economist Walter E. Williams has died. He was 84.

I am not sure how he died, he apparently was writing columns until very recently, last few days?

Yes, brilliant.

He opposed minimum wage laws, anti-discrimination laws in the private sector, defended the Confederate states’ rights to secession, argued for absolute body ownership (hint hint), praised the book Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal by Ayn Rand which criticizes Pope Paul VI, and was a libertarian.

Libertarianism is fundamentally at odds with Catholic social teaching, like it or not.

Well,so is the Dem agenda much to the chagrin and denial of those who follow the party blindly…

Actually the ‘Dem agenda’ is much closer to Catholic social teaching, except for several positions including abortion. I can cite encyclical after encyclical if you like.

Nah don’t bother. It’s not true…The Dems overall are antithetical to Church teachings…

This may be true, but Catholic social teaching says the INDIVIDUAL should act with charity to his neighbor. The government cannot be charitable. I believe it was Pope Pope JPII who said the social assistance state robs people of their dignity. You might have the quote as you seem better versed in encyclicals than I. I usually have scraps of quotes all over the place.

In reality, the agenda only works for individual, not governments. And there is much greater intrinsic evil in the Dem agenda.

I didn’t always agree with Williams. But I nearly always found him thought provoking. An excellent writer.

RIP

Sorry to read of Walter William’s passing. I’ve always enjoyed reading his writings and had read his most recent article this morning. He typically posted new articles Tuesday afternoon.

In recent years the range of such intervention has vastly expanded, to the point of creating a new type of State, the so-called “Welfare State”. This has happened in some countries in order to respond better to many needs and demands, by remedying forms of poverty and deprivation unworthy of the human person. However, excesses and abuses, especially in recent years, have provoked very harsh criticisms of the Welfare State, dubbed the “Social Assistance State”. Malfunctions and defects in the Social Assistance State are the result of an inadequate understanding of the tasks proper to the State. Here again the principle of subsidiarity must be respected: a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.100
By intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility, the Social Assistance State leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies, which are dominated more by bureaucratic ways of thinking than by concern for serving their clients, and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending. In fact, it would appear that needs are best understood and satisfied by people who are closest to them and who act as neighbours to those in need. It should be added that certain kinds of demands often call for a response which is not simply material but which is capable of perceiving the deeper human need. One thinks of the condition of refugees, immigrants, the elderly, the sick, and all those in circumstances which call for assistance, such as drug abusers: all these people can be helped effectively only by those who offer them genuine fraternal support, in addition to the necessary care.
In no way does this say there shouldn’t be welfare. This also must be squared with calls by various pontiffs for various forms of assistance by the state, most notably Paul VI.

I was referring to the Democratic agenda you posted. They want to increase welfare and forgive certain student debt. I’m not denying that some welfare is necessary.

I’m not in favor of the federal government picking “winners” for forgiving student debt. Teachers and nurses are no more “special” than accountants (me) and financial planners. I had to work my way through night school to get my degree. Do I get my money back?

I’m just not a fan of the Democratic agenda in general.

Mark Levin’s first guest on “Life, Liberty, and Levin”. A courageous and intelligent man.

What a brilliant man with a great sense of humor. May he rest in peace.
