Yes it’s valid. The priest is not hearing confessions via the app, the app simply tells people whether he is available to hear confessions.

I understand the intent since I know this priest. However I wonder if the wording of this article will add confusion, since it mentions the priest “doling out penance” seemingly while using the app.

Read the title of the article - I see much confusion about our Catholic faith and would rather we put forth the clear truth. I will pray that this will draw people back to the Sacrament. In the end that is what matters.

The article is written by a non-Catholic, describing the process of confession to other non-Catholics. The process is technically accurately described, but uses garbled grammar and an overly jocular tone. Here is my break down:

According to the paper, the so-called My Confessor App will allow the faithful to keep up digitally with when their local priest is hearing confession (online calendar telling when the priest is available), or the sacrament wherein Catholics recount sins to a “confessor” who , in turn, doles out penance, usually in the form of prayers (the sacrament where the priest hears confessions, and then offers advice and penance.).

News reporters also butchered the description of a similar “app” released a few years. My dad pointed out that the only the news anchors who went to Catholics school were able to accurately describe what the program did (See “Confession: A Roman Catholic App”).

Calling sins in or going to sacramental confession via a phone is not valid. Nor, is that what this app is doing; it is tell people if their priest is available if they want to go to the church and go to confession.
