God and his church are the only things I consider worthy of my faithful action.

All else is going to get scrutinized for the benefit to myself and my family.

This includes many environmental issues.
I am not going out of my way to recycle - unless there is some economic benefit.
Driving a fuel efficient car - I consider the cost benefit of it.
vz71, it seems like you have a lot of good qualities. i have made some very serious mistakes in my life and do not claim to have an excellent grasp on human perfection.

the following comments are simply food for thought, one Catholic Christian to another…A person can consider the sermon on the mount in Matthew in which the Lord Jesus says approximately, “If your neighbor has something against you, go and be reconciled to your neighbor, then go and offer your gift at the altar.”

Senseless, useless and unnecessary waste in general (not you specifically) could definitely cause a child who doesn’t have a pencil to write with or paper to write on to have something against a practicing Catholic Christian.

Just food for thought. Also, that child who doesn’t have a pencil or paper could be a Catholic Christian.

We should care for our resources and the environment that we must live in and share with others. To contaminate someone’s environment in order to feed our “consumer” wants is about as selfish as it gets, even if that other government is okay with it. We know its wrong. And thus I don’t see what the problem is to live as much in harmony with nature as possible.

The only problem is with those people to whom it becomes an obsession, or even takes the place of religion, completely obscuring one of the primary reasons of living in harmony with nature- so that other human beings will have access to it in the future and have a chance of living in a healthy environment. I would never place the environment above human beings, or above God, but it isn’t meant to be- it’s just another part of being responsible and loving.

Almost all of us lived in better “harmony with the environment” before the 20th century. Perhaps obsessions concerning this type of living are merely over-reactions to what has been a huge push towards superficial materialism and consumerism during this and the last century which has contaminated our environment and our spirituality.

What we consider “normal” today would have been considered huge wastes before. Such is the case that as I understand it there would not be enough resources in the world if it were to embrace and engage in the level of consumption the the U.S. does. Clearly, something is wrong when one’s own behavior would damn humanity were it to emulate yours.
