I so earnestly desire the sanctity of the traditional Roman Catholic spirituality, but I now got to a church that has “liturgical” dance WITHIN the liturgy, A church that has been uglified in my definition. The altar rails were taken down and the decoration has moved from roman catholic to african/modern
the high altar is ALMOST neglected, the canldes on both altars even for the Novus ordo mass(which is the ony one celebrates)
my priest is a self declared “Vatican II” priest
and yes I definetly do see vatican 2 as valid and our Holy Father B16 as a valid pope
Im no sede… but my priest has instructed me not to kneel to recieve comunion and argues his point fervently against traditional catholic things, He is a good man and a good preist its just that he has his funny moments
The worst part is the Music…my priest has often reffered to it as “JAZZ MASS”
SAXAPHONES, A FULL DRUMSET, ALL PROTESTANT GOSPEL HYMNS,AND A BASS GUITAR.
Im sick of it the elte of the parishoners accept and defend their actions. one woman even called the mass a communal meal and not only HATED the use of the high altar and altar rails but everytime I say this true sentance “MANY PEOPLE USED VATICAN 2 TO USE THE MASS TO DO WHATEVER THEY PLEASED WITH THE MASS, AND THAT GENERATION CREATED WEAK AND SPINELESS PRIESTS WHO CONTINUE THAT BAD TRADTITION EVEN UNTIL TODAY” she always says , politely, that she disagrees with me but cannot back that up. it seems she speaks of the mass as a community gathering of love… a sort of “WE are church” mentality. she throws the word “eucharist” in their but it seems to have no hold…
anyways , well I seem to have gone off on a tangent here but you get my point…and this is just one of the parishoners here. Iam desparate to leave, but dont know how plz help. remember I was raised here but the enviroment isnt for me.

I’m not sure where you live but I would definately abandon that particular parish. I drive 120 miles each way for a TLM (EF) twice a month. Once a month we have a Dominican low Mass at our local OF parish. This summer we are getting a once a month EF low Mass on a sunday afternoon. Our OF local parish is very reverent, and nobody is turned away for kneeling for communion. Hymns are nicely done and most from the 1880’s with some even older.

Your priest may be a very nice guy but he is not helping your spiritual life. Just look for another parish.

  1. pray for your priest and parish.
  2. get a list of nearby parishes (not sure how “nearby” nearby is around you, but other places that are a reasonable distance.)
2a) pray for your priest and parish.
  3. Visit each for 3-4 Sundays and if you find a couple you like, talk with the pastor, and explain your concern. Discuss your desire to move into that parish.
3a) pray for your priest and parish.
  4. select a parish.
4a) pray for your priest and parish.
  5. Enjoy your new home (parish).
  6. Pray for your old priest and parish.
I’ve known several priests who have taken refugees from other parishes into their parish for similar reasons.

If the environment is interfering with your ability to worship, or worse, there is concern over whether the Mass is licit, you need to find someplace you feel more comfortable.

I hope you find a more suitable parish and will pray for you, your priest and your parish.

I don’t think there really is a process of becoming a traditional Catholic. In my opinion, a traditional Catholic is one who supports the Traditional Latin Mass and traditional or orthodox doctrines and such.

I agree with this. 👍

Just go.

(and keep praying for the people and the clergy at this parish)

IMHO a “traditional Catholic” is one who understands that the OF is licit and every bit as holy as the EF.

I don’t know why the priest is making such a spectacle of the Mass. Everything you say is a distraction.

In his recent document, Verbum Domini, Pope Benedict made some remarks about Catholicism fitting in with other cultures. So, perhaps your priest is trying to drive the proverbial Mack truck through that advice.

You are important and you should be able to worship in a way that expresses your spirituality. Shoving culturalism down somebody’s spiritual throat is a type of spiritual fascism, in my opinion. The Mass in church should be a home to all people. But, I suppose that’s general advice.

We have to admit that the liturgy is very Westernized and we have to avoid being too fundamentalist about that. Some sort of balance is important. What church is he competing with, with the dance, etc.? It’s beyond me. I don’t see that on TV.

I’d like good “gospel” singing in the Catholic Church. The Pope says that the emphasis should always be on Jesus Christ. I’d like to see good “Jewish” singing and chanting in the Catholic Church.

The TLM and a church that looks like that? I’d certainly go there!

I have a hard time with noisey music at mass and I dislike flutes and every once in awhile there’s flute music…Instead of ajoyful noise it’s like ear splitting.

Saying that Vatican II ushered in a wave of bad tradition is ignorant. You just need to find a more Euro-centric aka “traditional” church. Hopefully you’ve found one by now. Praise dancing and all that other expressive stuff you mentioned is a cultural thing. If you don’t identify with it, you won’t like it. That’s how I am with the traditional Catholic styles of praise/music and worship. It might be traditional Catholic church culture, but it’s not MY culture. I don’t identify with Gregorian Chants and all that other standstill stuff. Different strokes for different folks.

Your experience is best described as an ignorant celebration where teachings and the sanctity of the Mass have been thrown out the window in the name of the “spirit” of Vatican II. A great council whose teachings have been ignored and replaced by personal liberal agendas.

Yes. A traditional Catholic is a faithful Catholic.

My Church which happens to be the Catholic Church teaches different. It says that praise dancing is forbidden at the Mass. Basically the whole experience iterated by the OP are examples of abuse in some form of Church teachings. Vatican II doesn’t justify the OP’s experience.

Tis beautiful…I’m a little confused by the candle arrangement and the American flag in the corner though.

But yeah, what everyone else has said, leave and pray for the parish. But before you do, let your priest know your opinions, politely. Depending on your response, you might want to talk to the bishop as well. [Most] Bishops do not want these kinds of abuses, they have every right to know and every responsibility to handle and prevent them.
