Hello everybody, this is my first post. I have been reading the forums for a few months, but haven’t said anything until now. I was raised Baptist, but my grandmother who I lived with was Catholic so I always had that influence in my life. As a high schooler I realized I wasn’t happy with the Baptist beliefs and started searching, and finally looked at the Catholic Church a few years ago. I had to do a bunch of research because did many things seemed contradictory to what I was taught. I still have so many questions. I attended Catholic masses for about 6 months last year, but haven’t been able to return due to work and kids. I am determined to get back into going and actually become Catholic, along with my childen ( I am divorced after an abusive marriage and have a autistic 6 year old boy, a 4 year old girl and 3 year old girl). I received a rosary for Christmas, Which I am happy about, but I still don’t know how to pray it. I don’t know how to become Catholic, and just need advice in general as I begin this journey please.

I would call the closest parish and ask them what you need to do to become Catholic. They usually have RCIA courses for just that. I will warn you ahead of time, though…it will be a longer process than you might expect. But it’s for a good reason…they want to be sure you know the faith before being confirmed. I was shocked by this because I expected to be able to walk down the isle and profess the faith any given Sunday. However, it’s very much worth the wait. Becoming Catholic is the best thing that has ever happened to me!

That’s wonderful that you want to become Catholic! Call your nearest Catholic church - preferably after New Years’ because a lot of churches are busy this week due to the holidays and they may have their offices closed or on limited hours - and tell them you would like to speak to someone about becoming Catholic. They should be able to put you in touch with the right person.

Here’s how to pray the Rosary (it contains the wording of the basic prayers in case you don’t already know them).

I believe your baptism is recognized by the Church. But you would have to go through RCIA to get your first communion and confirmation.

I recommend that you contact your nearest Catholic Church. You would go through RCIA to get Confirmed and have your first Communion at Easter. The Catholic Church recognizes your Baptism as a valid one. The Laudate app is something that can help you and I also recommend that you read Catholicism for Dummies. I am so happy you want to become Catholic! Prayers for you on the journey.

Welcome to the forum . You will have to go through the rite of Christian initiation for adults RCIA Which can be up to 2yrs depending on the parish program that is at your parish. Mine was a two year program I’ve hurd some places it can be longer.

Have you read any catechisms?

The Cathechism of the Catholoc Church is widely available, but to me, it seems like it’s at too high a level for beginners. When I first “returned,” (not having been really raised Catholic), I started with the Baltimore Catechism, which is more basic. One caveat, they teach Limbo as if it were doctrine, but it is one of a couple of theories.

I also recommend the book which brought me back: Home Sweet Rome, by Scott and Kimberley Hahn. It is the story of the discovery of Catholic truths by a Protestant minister, so may help you out a lot. It may even be better to read first, because it explains why the Catholic Church is right, and the BC assumes it 🙂

There are lots of Catholic prayer books, all of which include the basic prayers, several of which are included in the Rosary.

Here is a page with links to all the basic Catholic prayers including the Rosary.

Welcome to CAF and hoping we will be able to welcome you to the Church!

The folks who have described RCIA are likely correct. But meet with the local parish pastor and make sure you tell him you are a single caregiver of 3 children, one with a disability. There are other ways to become Catholic. Private instruction is still available with just cause.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I have been doing much reading and downloaded a few apps, and can say I have somewhat clumsily managed to pray the rosary one full time through. I am hoping that with practice and time I am able to memorize the prayers that I am not familiar with. I definitely will call my local parish and ask about RCIA classes. What about my children, will they be able to join the church with me?

If they’re minors, yes. If they’re young adults i.e. over the age of majority then they’d make their own decisions.

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
RCIC - Rite of Christian Initiation for Children

Confer with your priest to see where your children fit in.

Peace!!!

I really like this Institute of Catholic Culture – I’m registered in it. Just wish I had more time to look at everything.

I’m looking at this video and just realized that they’re commenting on the RC readings instead of the Byzantine readings. 😔

I thought I would post the Roman lectionary. I think Fr Hezekias and Fr Sebastian have the best gospel commentary. I always listen to both the Byzantine and the Roman because they know their stuff so well!

Do they also comment on the Byzantine lectionary? I can’t find it on their website.

I wonder why they don’t have the Byzantine stuff on the website.
