Want to buy a Missal, which one should I get?

I just bought the St. Joseph Weekday and Sunday missals today. They are a 3 volume set. They are about 20 bucks a piece. I was limited in what I could buy because of what our Catholic bookstore stocked…but I am very pleased with these. They are organized very well. They are published by the Catholic Book Publishing Co.
 
They’re revising the missal for the Novus Ordo Mass, so I would suggest an inexpensive one. Now is definitely not the time to go for the genuine leather MTF Missal.

Umm…the original post said Tridentine Missal 🙂 Though yeah well the English translation of the Novus Ordo is not only bland but out-dated as well. And the hierarches wonder why people are turning to the TLM. tsk tsk.

Somehow I missed that, oh well sorry about that. Then it’s either the Baronius or the Angelus, or pick one up on E-Bay.

I’m a first time poster but a long-time lurker and am very appreciative of all the information that I have learned while reading these forums. Lately, I have had an extreme attraction to the Tridentine Mass and am planning to attend one this weekend at St. Vincent DePaul in Toronto. I would like to know if anyone knows where I can buy the 1962 Roman Missal within the city as I would like to receive it before this coming weekend. I have tried some Catholic bookstores but nobody seems to carry it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
Hi Peter,

You may want to contact the parish to see if they have a missal booklet you can borrow to follow along with - many parishes offering the TLM have them at the back of the Church. Otherwise you could try St. Bernard Books. According to their website they have a “New Marian Missal” reprint of the 1958 edition available for $44.95. I don’t know how up-to-date their website is, though.

I bought an Angelus Press edition Missal because earlier this year I bought a Douy-Rheims Bible from Baronius press and was dissatisfied with the gold leaf application. It was ragged and is flaking off. The Angelus Press Missal seems to be very well constructed with crisp gold leaf.

Well I have the pocket DRB from Baronius, and the gilding wasn’t that good. It was better however with their Missal.

Just an FYI, I use the 1962 Missal provided by Angeles Press, even though it’s the publisher for the SSPX. The Missal itself contains no references to the SSPX, and there are no problems with it. I asked Monsignor Michael Schmitz, of the Institute of Christ the King (a canonical traditionalist fraternity), if use of this particular missal would be okay for personal use, and he said yes.

The reason why I like this one is because of the updated typeset which makes it easier to read. The prayerbook section can’t be beat.

Hmm… I dont know if the Angelus Missal also has the Examination of Conscience as the Baronius on has but if it does… does it include the additions that the slotted into Christian Warfare? (for example: attendance of NO = need to go confession)

There is no mention of the Novus Ordo mass in the Angelus 1962 Missal. The section marked “Examination of Conscience” is relatively short and based mostly on the ten commandments. I’m sure this is one reason why Monsignor Schmitz said there was nothing wrong with the Missal, and it would be fine for me to use it.
 
If you are looking for a new traditional Missal with the’ 62 rubrics, the Angelus Press version is one of the better ones. Depending where you get it they run around 40-50 dollars Since Angelus is the publishing arm of the SSPX, some people have objections to it. The Baronious Press is a good solid second choice though You might look on e-bay for a vintage’ 62 St Josephs, good luck:) as they are snapped up almost as soon as they are posted. Very popular, easy to use and hard to find. The '58 St Josephs is wonderful and what I personally use. It too is simple, easy to understand and was often given as a confirmation gift in the old days. You can find them at swap meets, flea markets and used book stores everywhere for usually around 5-10 bucks. If you think you might want one of those and can’t find one, PM me and I can send you one. Gratis/ I have several, actually more then several:)

Of course the '45 St Andrews is a superior Missal:thumbsup: but we are getting pretty far afield and esoteric here.

I have looked on ebay for Missals and I want to check out some bookstores. Thanks for the info 😃
 
Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a normative (N.O.) mass missal? I’m looking for one with Sunday and Daily readings. I purchased a New St. Joseph’s Sunday Missal as a first communion gift for my daughter last year. Some of the general and scriptural introductions seem a little troublesome.

I would say that St. Josephs is pretty good, although I prefer the Daily Roman Missal by Midwest Theological Forums and when I go to the Pauline Rite, it is what I use. It is rather pricey though running close to 80 bucks or so. It does have the Latin translations as well as numerous prayers and devotions and thus I feel worth it. It is kind of bulky though.

I would reccomned that you just buy a copy of the Magnificant every month and use that. It is small enough that you probably won’t be caught using it and thus subjected to the ridicule of the progressive types, and it has meditations and daily prayers as well. I think it runs about 4 dollars or so, but you can get a subscription at a discount. It is also small enough so that you can easily slip it into your pocket or purse as the case may be.

My question would be why you need one or want one?. The entire Pauline Rite is designed for full participation and reading from a Missal is actively discouraged. I’ve had several Priests and Deacons tell me that I am to listen and participate during Mass not read.🙂

Also, due to the sheer number of variations permitted in the Pauline Rite, I find it hard to keep up with or even know which way the Mass is heading most of the time…

I don’t know about the church specifically, but the bookstore at my former FSSP traditional parish carried both the Baronius and Angelus missals. Our priests were very involved, and if they had objected to the Angelus missal I know it wouldn’t have been available for purchase there.

I had the opportunity to compare both missals side-by-side, and ended up choosing the Angelus one. It was not only “prettier”, as you say, but the print was larger, clearer, and easier to read. I really can’t praise this missal enough.
