Want to buy a Missal, which one should I get?

I wish to purchase a Missal so I can take it to the Tridentine Mass now that it looks like I’m a regular. Which is the best version?

I don’t think there is any particular missal that could be considered “best”, it depends on your own preferences. I’d recommend you get out to the local Catholic bookstore and see them for yourself.

Also, you might certainly look at estate sales, house sales, flea markets, yard sales. Quality missals are printed on fine, high quality, paper, and will last several lifetimes. Ask your grandmother. I own an old handmissal that my grandmother passed to me, and its still quite usable although its a hundred years old.

I bought a Fulton J. Sheen daily missal (1961) on eBay and I love it. It is in very good condition, white leather cover. I have several older missals that have been in the family for years, but the one I bought on eBay is my favorite. Just wish I could go to Tridentine Mass more often.

I have the Baronius Press 1962 Missal, it’s beautiful, I recommend it highly.

The “1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal”, also known as the “1962 Daily Roman Missal, Illustrated Edition” is the Angelus one. The “1962 Roman Missal”, also known as the “1962 Latin Mass Missal” is the Baronius one. The first title I give for each is the most common.

Note that the Angelus Missal is commonly printed with a fake leather cover, but if you look hard enough, a genuine leather version IS available. The Baronius Missal is Moroccan leather, available in black or white. Also note that the Angelus is the publishing company of SSPX, and Baronius is by FSSP. From what I’ve determined, they’re very close to being identical. One big difference though. The Baronius has a current imprimitur, but the Angelus recycles an old one.

If you use the above two sites together, you should get a really good feel for both missals.

I’ll be honest, the Angelus looks a tiny bit prettier, but given that almost everything is equal, and I have to choose between SSPX and FSSP, I’ll go with Baronius. A lot of faithful Catholic bookstores carry the Angelus. Is there any actual problem with buying this volume from the church’s standpoint, out of curiousity?
 
Well one of the reasons I got Baronius is that I could get it for cheaper than the Angelus one. (I dont know if the Angelus one goes for lower than US$44.99, from allcatholicbooks.com)
 
Ok, now all that I have to do is find a Catholic bookstore in town that sells Missals 😉
