I should have asked this question awhile ago, but what exactly is an “Independent Priest”?
Some of them are priests who were once part of the Church but have “gone rogue,” others are random people dubiously ordained by Thuc-line bishops, that sort of thing. It’s like being your own one-man SSPV.I should have asked this question awhile ago, but what exactly is an “Independent Priest”?
The same question came to my mind. Could be any number of things: e.g. (a) a sede of one or another stripe (SSPV, SSGG, etc), (b) someone who paid to be ordained by one or another of the “rogue bishops” running around, (c) a priest who simply got fed-up and struck out on his own. Or, it could be something as innocuous as a retired priest (who may actually have faculties) wanting to offer Mass publicly. But those are just possibilities: I’d be interested to hear what the OP has to say.I should have asked this question awhile ago, but what exactly is an “Independent Priest”?
Or someone who likes to dress up and play priest, such as one of the ‘womenpriest’.The same question came to my mind. This is simply not true. Once a priest, always a priest. The mass is valid. Only the sacraments of confession and holy matrimony are arguably invalid because an independant priest has no jurisdiction over the laity.
“Independent” priests are generally are not of SSPX. Many of them report to bishops who are in full communion with Rome. Their Masses are therefore valid. The priests are operating outside of their own diocese and that’s where things get sticky. The local bishop will no doubt not like having a foreign priest say Mass within his diocese; however there may very well be old legal contracts drawn up with the local community and the chapel itself which the local bishop can’t do much about. Where the independent priest says the Mass is the driver here and some due diligence must be undertaken by those attending such Masses as to whether the priest is in good standing with his own bishop. As with all priests not having full faculties, confessions and marriages are another matter.Whether or not it is a sin for the OP to attend masses offered by the priest depends on the reason for attending those masses. If the reason is that the OP is attracted to the beauty and reverence of the TLM then it’s OK. But if the reason is that the OP rejects the validity of the Novus Ordo then it’s a sin. Here’s a letter from the Vatican that addresses the issue:
…
- The priests of the Society of St. Pius X are validly ordained…
If the EF is to be offered to “all those who request it” as the POPE himself stated - who are the Bishops to defy him? The POPE is still the Pope. If you are trying to offer the erroneous opinion that there isnt opposition to the EF and in fact some Bishops who for all intents and purposes make it near to impossible for the Parishioners to frequent it - then yes - that is exactly what I am saying and I am not naming names. To say it isnt going on is disingenous on your part IMO. The Pope was clear in the Motu - those who request it should be furnished it. So to those Bishops and Priests who are not in compliance - they are being disobedient.Pardon what sacrament is being denied? And what Bishop is openly defying the Pope? Are you suggesting bishops lack local jurisdiction?
What I read indicates that the vatican it’s self does not oppose EF, it doesn’t say the local bishop can’t regulate it… Which in some cases is what is happening. While I, and apparently you disagree with that position, those Bishops take, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to accuse them of being in open and obstiant defince of Rome.
That is quite a serious charge.
This has nothing to do with SSPX, does it?Clarifications on this please. Would it be a sin to attend a daily Tridentine mass offered by an independent priest.
I attend a Tridentine mass in the diocese every Sunday now and love the reverence for the mass but if a priest is out of communion with Rome does that sour the Liturgy?
I am pretty sure the sacrament is valid, being an ordained priest, but am unsure as to what my standing would be with the Diocese and Rome.
I wish that the diocese would offer that beautiful way of worshiping and as we know our Holy Father has tried to make it more available but priests and bishops are still fighting it.
Something no one wants to admit and I have seen this debate numerous times including a very good one between Jimmy Akins and John Salza -" Once a Priest always a Priest" From Psalms - faculties in times of Heresy. A Validly ordained Priest can confect the Sacraments if petitioned by the Faithful. Even if he is under censure. And yes people try to argue from Ecclesiastic Law or from a Canon Law perspective but what trumps both is the Supreme Law of the Church - the Salvation of Souls. Ultimately the will of GOD must be served. A Catholic must be furnished the Sacraments by every Priest if petitioned. (Provided its physically possible)This has nothing to do with SSPX, does it?
If your Sunday obligation is satisfied at SJB and you wish to know about the validity of the TLM at OLHC, you can save these guys from the heartbreak of carpal tunnel syndrome by sending me a PM.
I have first-hand experience assisting the TLM at both venues, know the priests personally, do not quote canon law, and have never declared anyone a sinner.
This one’s easy.
That’s exactly what I was wondering. I sent you a PM. Thanks for the replies everyone, this has helped. This has nothing to do with SSPX, does it?

Have you tried requesting a more regular Tridentine mass from your Bishop? I might start getting feelers out in my Diocese to see if there is enough support for more than monthly worship with the fantastic liturgy. That’s exactly what I was wondering. I sent you a PM. I don’t know much about the priests, I hope to learn more about them.
It says on their website that they have an SSPX meeting, but I don’t know if all the priests themselves are SSPX.
There is a Byzantine Catholic church nearby, so in order to gain more reverence I may attend that liturgy so that I don’t attend mass by a priest not in communion with Rome. But it is not the Tridentine.![]()
