Want to learn some Latin

I’m not sure if I’m in the right forum for this. Sorry if I’m not.

I was raised in Catholic home, but it was a very liberal one, with no instruction. I am still young enough that I never had exposure to Latin Masses. I have recently returned to the Catholic Church after being a Baptist for 30 years. I have read a lot and I think that I’ve got a good grasp of Catholic teachings now.

However I notice that in so many different Catholic writings and websites, Latin phrases are thrown around quite a bit. I have never studied Latin, and don’t know what most of these things mean.

Does anyone know of a good website where I and others like me can pick up the meaning of some of these phrases? I would especially appreciate a free site.

I took Latin in University and I used Wheelock’s Latin. I searched the name in google, and I found this very interesting website.

Learning biblical latin is not that hard, since you have probably read most of the Bible and you will be able to recall from the english how best to translate the text. Things get harder when you try to read classical authors like Cicero, Virgil, or Latin church fathers, such as Augustine or Ambrose. But, like all things, it takes time and practice and a lot of effort.

Here is a like to the latin library christian authors page. If you click on the Latin Library link on this page, it will take you to the non Christian authors. If you click on the Classics Page, you will find a whole bunch of links that may be usefull to you.

One final note, if you want a good non technical bible showing both the Latin and the English, I would recommend the Navarre Bible.

If you just want a straight translation, try the University of Notre Dame’s Latin Dictionary, which also has a link to Whitacker’s Words, just a straight dictionary.

P.S. If you have any specific phrases you need help with, just post them and I’m sure someone could help you with a translation.
