Wanting more contemporary, upbeat Christian music (KLOVE)

I listen to KLOVE radio all day as I love contemporary christian music.

In college I lived at a Catholic Newman Center and attended a charismatic praise and worship group. It was a great way to end the weekend before a stressful week, with singing, guitars, and songs. Peace for my soul! This was totally separate from mass.

Now I just have to listen to the radio alone. Our mass does not have any such music. That’s OK, I understand that. But if I want to sing praise and worship CONTEMPORARY upbeat Christian music during the week? There is no outlet that I have found, save a mega church that is pretty far.

I am OK with cranking up the radio but miss the community of the praise and worship group.
Anyone else feel this way? (Our Catholic church DOES have this music during Vacation Bible School and my kids love it!) We listen to the CD they gave us all the time.

I will warn you now, that this thread will probably get ugly.

While I love this type of praise & worship music and I am lucky to have a parish that has Mass with it, we, especially on this forum, are the “odd men out”.

My best suggestion to you is to check with your diocese to see if there is a Charismatic community in your diocese or a Life Teen Mass.

I agree. I’d LOVE to hear contemporary music at Mass. We have a wonderful Christian station here in St. Louis and I’d love to hear that kind of music at Mass.

There are an awful lot of parishes in St. Louis that offer praise and worship music. I really don’t like it myself, but I know for a fact that several parishes have it.

I am not a fan of most contemporary Christian music, as I got my fill of it in my years as a Protestant/Evangelical and felt that most of it was shallow. I do like some of the Catholic “CCM”-style music that I have heard since then, though. Having a praise and worship group outside of Mass as you describe is perfectly fine, although I don’t think it is the best kind of music for Mass.

Just my opinion; I realize that others may differ on this.

I love my parish, despite the type of music they play. I wouldn’t leave just for that reason.
Having said that, this past Saturday they did sing Thy Word, by Amy Grant, before Mass began.

I didn’t really mean that you should leave your parish, but you could find out what parishes play that kind of music and attend Mass there.

I know. Another thing is, I’m within walking distance of my parish and have anxiety, especially when driving, so unless my friend drives, it’s unlikely I’d go very far from here.
The churches in my community aren’t those who play contemporary music.

I don’t believe in segregating “CCM,” the overwhelming majority of which is sola scriptura Protestant, into its own category.

I like ALL uplifting and joyous music, whether it’s The Ramones or Husker Du or even Chance The Rapper, who openly proclaims the gospel in his music.

Of course, we can’t really help much with that.

I understand these desires, but only so far as you are trying to order them properly. Making the entirety of Mass all about your own preference for a particular style of music, for example, would be out of proportion. Wanting to go to Protestant services because you want a social way to express your musical tastes would likewise not be a proper ordering of things.

Maybe I’m an idiot. Feel free to take or leave this advice with that in mind. But I think that worship music can easily become one of those exterior things that slowly but surely grows in importance over God. Oh, we’ll rationalize this and say we’re just trying to worship God properly. Are we? Maybe. Maybe just partially giving up something we’re emotionally drawn to might be an even more pleasing form of worship.

And, for the record, this advice would apply if you were just attached to traditional Latin Church music as you are to Contemporary forms of American Church music.

I’m not arguing against the music, but encouraging you to not be overly attached.

No, you’re not an idiot. Thanks for the post!

I feel much more engaged when I listen to this music, and it inspires me throughout the week. Helps me to be more kind, even. I even sang along during mass last week (even if I couldn’t hit the high notes, for those I just opened my mouth), and am trying to appreciate all music. So for me, music is a form of prayer, and it really pulls me in. During mass, of course, maybe we don’t have that kind of music that’s “contemporary.” But all uplifting religious songs also have a message of God’s love behind them, and it might sound cliche, but for me that’s really powerful. Different than if it were just an uplifting song. I watched most of the family and tons of friends just leave the church, any church…and I won’t give up on something that engages me and pulls at me.

I’m there in mass. I am probably one of the only ones with the book open trying to sing (and they invite us all to join in but most don’t). And my FAVORITE songs since I was a kid? Christmas carols (the faith filled ones). I have always been that way. But I can’t find a Christmas worship group year-round, lol. Or I’d be interested in that!
I don’t mean any harm in liking music, but I admit for me, it’s powerful. And maybe I don’t like most traditional music (I like some), but I can’t help that. And my kids light up with a good song, and it’s so hard trying to keep everyone behaving at mass sometimes, especially a restless toddler. So I appreciate when they are engaged, too.

I listen to a similar radio station in my car, contemporary praise & worship music. I do love the traditional music of the Mass and do not want to have praise & worship music at Mass.

I listen to the praise & worship music in the car because it is better than the alternative, contemporary, not Christian music, or my old favorite classic rock, which is not Christian either. I find it helps to keep my focus on what is important.

At home I listen to Catholic music on Pandora. If I could figure out how to get my phone to work through my car I would listen to Pandora in the car.

I’ve been directing praise and worship groups for Catholic churches since I was in high school (I’m a grad student now!). Do you have any musical ability? If so, start a band at your church. If they don’t want you playing for mass, offer to host adoration in the evening and play music for it. Doing this is called Exalt or XLT in the Lifeteen movement and is a proven strategy for getting young people involved in their faith.

I love this music as well, and I’m fortunate that we do have one choir that sings this type of music - so I joined!

Have you looked into starting a music ministry for more contemporary praise and worship music. Ours is more youth-focused, but there are a few adults, and we all enjoy it. If you have any musical talent at all you can likely get it started, and if not, perhaps just spreading the word that you are interested might draw the attention of others.

I find the lyrics theologically shallow if not problematic. The emotional high it generates can easily conflate very natural passions with an authentic spiritual experience. I was raised with this stuff as an Evangelical. I ran from it. …but my feelings aside, there are LOADS of parishes that offer it. You don’t have to look long.

Not sure where you are, but I live in St. Louis Missouri. Almost all the larger parishes in my area have a youth mass which is usually the one that has the contemporary music. Personally, St. Catherine Laboure in South County has a noon mass that you would probably love.
