Wanting to believe miracles

Unless it is a miracle that the Church declares central to your faith, you need not worry trying to believe in them.

Many Catholic theologians and clergy reject some of these extemporaneous events, so do not worry. If a Marian event is essential, it will be declared so by the Church. If you need to have the faith to believe in, you will not have to work so hard or worry over it either. The Spirit of God will give you the strength you need to put trust in any work of God that happens.

Not having faith in a Marian event does not mean you are a bad person or that it didn’t happen or that God doesn’t accept you. The Song of Bernadette, the film, comes from the best-selling novel written by a Jew, Franz Werfel, who was a secular Jew and died at least a nominal one–all this despite having enough faith to pray to St. Bernadette to help him escape from the Nazis to America (upon which he would write his book if this happened).

Werfel likely had little faith in many Christian things, perhaps even the Marian event he wrote of, but he did believe in Bernadette.

The way his life ended and the way his book was accepted was a sure sign that it is not the faith in the miracles that matters, it is what you do upon hearing about the miracles that is important.
