Like I said, my 1 gig internet speed is $50 a month which is a tremendous value. I prefer to watch the local news and just a couple of channels. If I can get DirectTv through Amazon fire stick I may just do that. I don’t want to have to fool with satellite installations.

The only time I might even consider a sports package is during college football season.

Get an antenna for basic channels and news, then get Netflix.

Unless you really like sports, there not much of a reason anymore to have anything more than an antenna or basic cable.

That’s just it. Basic cable today for 13 channels is $88.

Money is super tight now in our house and I’m wanting to cut the cable bill. It’s $158 a month for cable and internet. To give some perspective, my electric bill was only $65 for all of Christmas! Of course I called the cable company and they could reduce my channels by half for only a $14 reduction in my bill.

We watch only about 5 real channels and don’t have use for the others. I’ve heard SlingTV can be ok, but I’ve read some bad reviews.

Anyone have some advice?
Netflix and Amazon Prime have tons of programming. Rabbit ears for local channels. If you’re like me and “need” sports programming, Sling TV has a couple of ESPN and a few other sports channels. Sling TV can be kind of “spotty,” but it seems to be getting better.

(I recently read that Sling TV is currently beta testing a DVR-type of service.)

NBC, CBS and ABC all have some of their recent shows available for free streaming.
Yeah, but those are all extreme left-wing outlets, and they are regulated by the FCC, an agency of the evil federal government which is supported by the illegal confiscation (taxation) of the wages earned by hard working, gun toting, God fearing, Trump supporting folks.

Then don’t watch their shows.

DirecTV Now is a streaming service, not satellite.
We have direct tv but will be switching to dish network in a couple of days.
If you want access to EWTN or other Catholic channels you can get Roku which is like the Amazon fire stick but in my opinion much better

Sports and probably 4 series are what keep me funding the space program…

This is sarcasm… I hope.

Outdoor or indoor TV antenna! Most urban areas have enough broadcast channels that cable is unnecessary. Get internet service but no TV package.

We dropped our cable service 5 years ago. We use digital antennas that can be put in a window or hung on an interior wall.

You can check your over the air tv coverage at TVFool.com.

If you have Amazon Prime, the included programming is okay. Barely okay, imo, not something of value on its own.

We prefer Hulu to Netflix. As someone else mentioned, most of the networks have apps for Roku and AppleTV that allow you to watch recent programming for free, usually a week after it aired, but they don’t keep a library of past episodes available, just the recent episode.

We tried Sling TV for a few months but didn’t watch it enough to justify the expense. One positive about Sling TV is they give you a free week to try it out and will also give you a free Roku device if you prepay for X amount of months of service. I’ve seen a free Roku stick for 1 month of service or a Roku box (don’t recall which version) for 3 months of service. They also offered a discounted AppleTV device, too. Another thing about Sling TV, if you’re interested in sports, they do have ESPN in one of their tiers and also offer some add-on channels.

I think the most value-oriented aspect of these services is that you can turn them on and off whenever and as often as you want. Use Hulu for # months of the year, then cancel it and use Netflix for # months. We’ll probably use Sling TV again during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays next year and turn it off after the New Year.

I would agree with this. The programming is a bonus for me - I mostly have Amazon Prime so I can get super cheap diapers (the discounts I get more than cover the annual cost). They do have some good children’s programming - a few seasons of some of the better PBS shows for kids, and Shaun the Sheep, which I think may be the best kids’ TV ever.

You might want to try no tv at all. We get movies from the library & occasionally buy movies, but that’s it. We watch television on rare occasions & haven’t found anything we’d be willing to pay for.
That’s what we do to. When I was a kid my mom used to tell the cable salesman, “I already have a sewer pipe and it takes the filth out.” I recommend everybody expirement with the no tv option at least once in their life. It’s amazing how jarring the entertaining portrayal of immorality is when you’re not desensitized. Makes one wonder if there’s a sin in enjoying it.

Not everything on cable television is garbage. What about EWTN? I don’t think it’s that hard to avoid the stuff that your mother would say belongs in a sewer.

That was a long time ago. She has satellite tv now.

I have to agree with this statement.
Because I know EWTN isn’t sewer material.

Do you know anyone who only watches ewtn? Yer right though. There is a range of beneficial through destructive programming. Most people watch vain things primarily.
