I split this from the Mass Settings so I didn’t hijack that thread

Lets start off by saying, I am not vocally trained, but can at least come close as a result of my lessons for Piano, Baritone Horn, and Violin.

That being the case, I do not at this point intend on forming a group(is Schola the word?) for church, but rather for personal use and because its cool to listen to, so why not sing.

I did read one article posted in the topic about Mass Settings that explained how the notation worked, and it was easy enough to understand, other than when it talks about pulses, and how the changes in one syllable shouldn’t glide. The downside of the article is that while it showed the notation, there were no links to how it should sound.

Are there any references that would do both so I could hear what each notation sounds like, as well as a source some more common, and easier chants to learn?

that looks so awesome. I am *so *going to have to try that!!

That page does look like a good introductory explanation. And here’s some chant to practice on:

musicasacra.com/pdf/kyriale.pdf

Just let the music serve the text and don’t make it sound note-y (I wouldn’t even think about “pulses” if I were you).

BTW, you should be able to find Church Latin pronounciation guides on the web if you need it. It’s really not hard.

And you might want to listen to www.choraltreasure.org to hear lots of different chant sounds.

And here’s a website where you can put it all together. If you click on the link for a particular day of the Church year, it will give you the proper parts of the Latin Mass for that day written in chant notation, and above each printed chant you can click on another link that gives you an audio file to listen to.

Open up two window simultaneously, and you can listen, read, and sing along!

Hey,

I’ve found these tips for singers on the internet, since it works for me, I’m attending a vocal class at the opera house, although I sing rock, my teacher teaches me the same technique as it is here.bestsingingtechnique.webs.com check it out. With this technique I’m able to sing perfectly in any style. I really recommend this.

i looked back, and this was on the forums a while ago (see the pdf i attached)

if you know modern nototion already it should help you with the mechanicacs of the chant, maybe not the rythm as much though.

Our church has a gregorian chant choir. Find a parish that has one or seek to form one. Ours is only about a year old, they only chant at the 7:30am Mass. This is good since the 1st Sunday of the Month the 7:30am is in Latin.
