Was Adolf Hitler a Roman Catholic ? Please explain

Dear Mr. Keating,
I have been carrying on a discussion with an athiest regarding the religious beliefs of Adolf Hitler and Mussolini. I have been maintaining that Hitler was not Christian, that he rejected Catholicism, and that he was influenced by the writings of Neitzche in so far as carrying out the extermination of “inferior races”. However, I feel that I have placed myself in a bit of a pickle, because I’m having trouble finding resouces to substantiate this. Nevertheless, I was delighted to discover your e-letters, which have helped me tremendously. In particular, I was delighted to find your e-letters of May 20, 2003, in which you state that “neither Hitler or Mussolini was a Catholic (or a believer of any sort)…” Have you expanded on this topic in any of your books or other writings? I am in need of references to substantiate this very point.

Can anyone else comment on this subject?

It is common knowledge that Hitler, being actually Austrian not German, was brought up as a Catholic. He rejected Catholicism in favor of the “might makes right” philosophy of fascism. However, he did use the ceremonial aspects of his Catholic upbringing in his grand stagings of Nazi rallies and speeches. Mussolini put himself forward as a father of the people, aping the fatherhood of the priesthood in the Catholic Church, which he knew people would respond to during the unrest of his times in Italy. All these are facts readily available in any good history book covering the era.

I don’t think that Hitler was Christian / Catholic. He may have been “raised” nominally as a “christian”, but he does not appear to have been a follower of Jesus Christ.

Hitler disliked christianity, which he thought weak and “un-German” preferring pagan ideals. However he did not make this public in his early years. However he did not go to Church after childhood.

Here are some quotes revealing Hitler’s true beliefs on Christianity, recorded by his close confederates;
"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together…
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity’s illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity…

Hitler–and most, if not all, the top Nazis, were involved in occultism, & were into the old Germanic gods.
Although Hitler was baptized as a Catholic when he was a baby, I think it would be ridiculous to think of him as Christian in any sense…In fact, many, many people at the time believed that he was the Antichrist. Because of his evil & also because of his alliance with paganism.
 
Rudolph Hess was Roman Catholic, and in the biorgraphy of Maximilian Kolbe, it speaks of Hess asking to see a priest while he was in jail and that he repented of his sins. Apparently he had an epiphany and realized what he had done…
 
Even if one could show that Hitler thought of himself as a Catholic throughout life, I’m not sure this would prove anything worthwhile. I think that the stone cold fact that totalitarian governments of the 20th-century were muderously hostile toward religion flies in the face of the scoffer’s cherished contention that religion is the cause of the most murder in history.

Does not matter what religion Hitler was, because he was on METH!!! He did this for many years, making him CRAZY. Religion did not create his actions. Drugs did.
 
What do you mean METH…as in methylated spirits or what. I do know the guy was a meglomaniac

If he was, then he was Catholic. Remember the indelible mark on the soul.

Last I heard Hitler was ex-communicated so would that not mean he was not Catholic?
It is unknown whether Hitler was formally excommunicated or not, but it doesn’t matter. Hitler was already excommunicated ipso facto under the canon law of the Catholic Church for his numerous sinful crimes. He could only have returned to the Catholic faith, even assuming that he would ever have wanted to, by having his excommunication removed by the Pope himself. The lifting of such excommunication is reserved to the Pope, latae sententiae*.*
Furthermore, the conference of German bishops excommunicated all Nazis in 1930, and in the 1932 elections forbade Catholics to vote for a Nazi. By being the leader of the Nazi party, Hitler had already put himself outside of the Church.

On, Mussilinni, I remeber watching a documentary on him on the Bio. Channel (a black and white one) and it said that he was a self-proffesed aithiest.
