Hello! This has been bugging me for some time, but basically a few weeks ago I found this passage by St. Augustine in some text called the “Enchiridion.” Now, I realize this is something that probably has to be read in the context of the times Augustine was in and the battle against the Pelagian heresy, but some Reformed groups on facebook have been spreading some quotes around, specifically the title of a certain section: “Men are not Saved by Good Works, nor by the Free Determination of their Own Will, but by the Grace of God through Faith.”
here is the expounded version:
http://biblehub.com/library/augustine/the_enchiridion/chapter_30_men_are_not_saved.htm

Could someone more knowledgeable than I maybe explain what Augustine was getting at here?

Thank you and God bless 😀

Umm… that’s what the Catholic Church teaches, too. We are not saved by our works, but rather, by the free gift of God. (That doesn’t mean that our works are immaterial, or that they have no impact in our salvation… just that it’s not through our own merit that we are saved.)

These “reformed groups” that you’re encountering are tilting at windmills – they’re condemning a Catholic theology that doesn’t exist. 😉
