Was C. S. Lewis Catholic?

I’m looking forward to the movie The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and I was just curious if C. S. Lewis was Catholic. I knew that he was good friends with J. R. R Tolkien, but there seems to be a lot of controversy as to whether C.S. Lewis was a Protestant.

C. S. Lewis was a high-church Anglican whose beliefs on many issues closely aligned with Catholicism but he never entered the Catholic Church. His friend and fellow writer Sheldon Vanauken, who did enter the Catholic Church, compared Lewis to a modern-day Moses who pointed the way to the Promised Land (the Church) for many converts to Catholicism but was unable to finish the journey himself.
