Was "Cardinal" Joseph Cdl. Ratzinger's middle name?

This may be a silly question, but I have noticed several places including in the Catechism of the Catholic Church were Joseph Ratzinger is refered to as “Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger” instead of “Cardinal Joseph Ratizinger” or “Bishop Joseph Ratzinger.”

Is this a standard naming convention (or were his parents just optimistic)?

Pope Benedict XVI, the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, was born Josef Alois Ratzinger (English, “Joseph Aloysius Ratzinger”). “Cardinal” is the title he was given when he was named to the College of Cardinals by Pope Paul VI in 1977. It is a convention of Catholic protocol for the title “Cardinal” to be placed either before the proper name or in between the Christian name and the surname.
