In all try to keep in mind that we have 500 years of hindsight to judge the right and wrongs Columbus did.

Living in Europe was a challenge, never mind sailing across the Atlantic to a new strange world.

Also, when Columbus sailed on his 4th voyage( I believe it was the 4th) to South America, the natives there were not so friendly. In fact he met up with headhunters and cannibals.

There’s nothing in the Catholic faith that requires you to have any particular opinion on Columbus. I don’t know why so many Catholics find the notion that Columbus might have been a crappy person to be so threatening. He enslaved people and committed rape. Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t get why I’m supposed to admire him as a perrson. As an explorer maybe, sure.

The problem with revisionist history is that there is a lack of understanding of the circumstances of the times.

He enslaved people and committed rape.
Im not picking on you but i heard that is fake news.
I can’t find any proof that he personally raped anyone. You have any proof he himself actually raped anyone. Remember he would travel with Catholic bishops, so your saying he raped in front of the bishop?

I have a hard time taking it seriously when anyone sincerely uses the term “fake news” (unless you’re being tongue in cheek, in which case bravo) but I’ll pull the source for you in a bit. And no, I’m not saying he did it with the bishop watching. Why would that be the implication?

I’m sure he urinated too, but I doubt the bishop was staring at him while he did it. It’s not like the bishop was glued to his side 24/7.

Besides, it’s not like bishops haven’t done horrible things too.

I’m not gonna get raked over the hot coals for it. It’s seriously what people believe :scream:It’s absurd… from a certain point of view.

This is little more than a subject that’s the result of American PC culture. That’s why, for instance, no one is talking about the Supremacist attitude of Charles Darwin of even that of some Native braves.

You may well be right on what Columbus did, but the reality he’s an easy target because of the PC nonsense, not because people REALLY want justice, which isn’t possible now anyways as it’s all in Gods hands. The most constructive thing to do would be to pray for the dead.

We’ve seen this same song and dance before from people. Just a bunch of flag-waving and virtue signaling with no real results.

Altogether a true holocaust.
Don’t oversell it, I’d never put disease or the inevitable skirmish between movements of people in the same category as shoving Jewish civilian children into gas chambers and ovens.

Yeah peeing in private and rape is 2 matters but i get your point. Yes since bishops did wrong but does that mean all bishops done wrong. Can’t blame every priest, bishop for another mans fault.
That wasn’t the case with Columbus, i didn’t hear of of any bishop doing bad at that time. Your throwing in more accusations.

Sorry your upset. Im just wondering on Columbus. I don’t know what your messages mean

A priest i talked to said schools are making these false comments about Columbus.
Also if Columbus never actually set ground on America then why does he take the blame for all this stuff in America?
Once again i don’t know im just learning

I’m not upset. It’s humor. People blow history out of proportion and virtue signal using modern notions. It’s all water under the bridge as far as I’m concerned. Why waste time arguing over it?

Yeah that’s true. Im partial Indian of the Apache and Pueblo tribe. I dont know much about Columbus, but I’m also a Knight of Columbus.
So that’s why im researching.
I see statues come down and I’m wondering why when Catholics portray him as a good man

I’m not accusing any particular bishop of anything, I’m just saying the fact that there were clergy with him doesn’t prove bad stuff didn’t happen.

Again, though, why are we as Catholics supposed to have a particular opinion on Columbus? He’s not a Saint or a Doctor of the Church. He’s just an explorer. Whether he was a decent person or not has no particular importance for us as Catholics.

As I see it, whoever opened up the Americas to exploration was gonna get blamed for a lot. Anyone involved in critical points in history will attract controversy. Just look at the American Civil War. Although the Union won, they’re far from uncontroversial. We just have to accept that humanity is a mixed bag of good and bad decisions. To sum Columbus up, He was an explorer not a saint.
