So the Catechism clearly states above:
A person is not bound to tell the truth to someone who is not permitted to know that truth, by making use of ‘discreet language.’

What would this discreet language be, and what words exactly could the OP have used in his reply to that gang?
(as the catechism states the truth does not need to be told to people who do not deserve the truth,)

I’m surprised these kinds of things happen in first world countries.

Google ‘peace walls Northern Ireland’ yes it’s very difficult over there still people can and do risk their lives in the ‘wrong’ neighbourhood.

This is a young kid who has grown up in an environment where to be Catholic is to be at risk of your life in some areas . Please be kind

I know what Yr saying but this is a 15 Yr old child they are in fear of their physical life let alone the spiritual stuff xxx

I am sorry this happened.

I live in the US so I know it’s different. However, I am a convert to the faith and my family is very hostile towards religion and they do have a history of violent behavior.

During a confession with a priest I mentioned as a sin I had not told my family of my conversion to the faith yet. He reassured me I had not committed sin due to my circumstances. My situation is a little different from yours in that I had never been directly asked the question “are you Catholic” and then denied it so I cannot say if this changes anything.

It cannot hurt to mention it to your priest. This particular thing I was worried of mentioning myself and it was received very kindly and with much encouragement, but I understand this fear may linger and recur in the future, thus you should seek out a definitive answer from a priest you trust. You will be in my prayers.

Myth buster, this person did NOT deny Christ.

Now please show me where we are forbidden from denying that we belong to the Catholic Church. In official Vatican Documents.

This person did not deny they were Christian either.

Are you, myth buster, conflating two things, denying Christ and being Christian ,with, saying a person is not a Catholic.

These are two separate things. Please re read what the OP was asked and said.

No, you’re ignoring what the OP actually said and the fact that she lives in a place where it can be life-threatening to announce your religion. The OP made the right call. All she needs to do is talk to her Priest and get some advice.

It is never ok to deny your Faith.
If you haven´t been in a situation of danger for your life and live a safe life in a country without religious violence, please, leave this discussion to others.

I’ve heard Father Mitch on EWTN a few times say that any lie is sinful. The example he gives is the classic question of what happens if the Nazis come around asking if you’re harboring Jewish people. He suggests giving a non-answer, which I feel would be as unwise as the one earlier in this thread about pretending not to speak English.

For the record, I feel the OP did nothing wrong. If a person wanted to announce their faith under threat of violence I fully understand, but there is no way to fault someone from lying in that same situation.

Yeah, this is simply nonsense and would have caused - in the Nazi example - a death sentence.
The Gestapo clearly wasn´t confident with subtle non-answers. Everybody who wouldn´t lie in this situation (and cause the own death AND the death of the jews in this example) is in my eyes simply irresponsible cruel.
Honestly, I don´t care that much about the opinion of 21 century priests in privileged countries in this specific matter.

Agreed. And this is a not only a kid, but faced by thugs who outnumbered her and her friends; she did the right thing.

i didn’t realize OP was a female

in retrospect, yes, i agree, she had to protect herself

my relatives are from belfast; so i am sensitive to this topic

And at the risk of repeating myself, I’m fairly certain that her priest will tell her she did the right thing in this particular situation.
